Refugee Artisan Initiative
Programs
Program 1 [2020]
We have trained 25 refugee and immigrant women as artisans in sewing and jewelry-making. We maintained our physical location, or Maker's space, in Seattle which we use for training, co-working, and public events. We have continued to build capacity by hiring additional staff and networking with many local companies and individuals to make small batches of products for them.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$140.2KRefugee Artisan Initiative Support
Most refugees who arrive in the US come to four states, one is Washington. When they arrive, refugee and low-income immigrant women are among the most vulnerable members of US society, facing reduced employment prospects due to childcare needs, lack of education and employment history, and language barriers. The unemployment rate for for refugee women hovers around 60%. They are often targeted by exploitative professions. But for those with sewing skills who want a safe workplace, resettlement offices know right where to take them: the Refugee Artisan Initiative (RAI) Maker Space + Cultural Center. RAI offers women work the day they arrive, earning a living wage and flexible hours to accommodate children.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$801.1K
