Behind the Walls
The RCP Behind the Walls program helps incarcerated individuals’ access, afford, and efficiently complete their postsecondary education. The RCP model relies on comprehensive academic counseling, peer mentoring, reentry case management, DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) and prior learning assessment (PLA) strategies to help people who are incarcerated and formerly incarcerated set a career path, gain college credit, and complete degrees and certificates.Once an RCP student is released, they are equipped with a portfolio to present to the institutions of higher education to support the PLA process.GeographiesRhode Island, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedContinuing education,College preparation,Educational testing,Equal opportunity in education,Undergraduate education,University education,Justice rights,Adult peer mentoringAdults,Incarcerated people573–Beyond the Walls
Beyond the Walls is designed to address these challenges by offering personalized guidance, resources, and encouragement to help incarcerated individuals navigate their educational journey and prepare for successful reintegration into society. Our Beyond the Walls DSST course is held at the Roger Williams University UC Campus in Providence. The 12-week instructor led course is an opportunity for formerly incarcerated individuals to continue to obtain college credits once released. If a student needs additional academic support to get through the materials the Outside Pathways Coordinator will arrange tutoring through our partnership with RI Petey Greene Program. Our Outside Pathways Coordinator serves as a bridge to connect individuals with relevant support services, including mental health, substance abuse and vocational training programs. The coordinators assist individuals in setting realistic short-term and long-term goals, and regularly review progress to celebrate achievements and adjust plans as needed. The coordinator also helps students with obtaining the documents that students need after release that are necessary for gaining employment. As part of our holistic approach, we connect our students with technological and academic tutoring that enables them to fully engage in their studies.GeographiesRhode Island, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedContinuing education,College preparation,Educational testing,Equal opportunity in education,Higher education,Justice rights,Adult peer mentoringAdults,Incarcerated people52–
