Earth to Sky Park Educational Programs
Mayland Community College Enterprise Corporation (MEC) is a 501(c)(3) that provides support to Mayland Community College. The Earth to Sky Park is an environmental educational park for those interested in learning about the natural world we live in, from the Earth to the sky. It is home to the Bare Dark Sky Observatory (BDSO), but also the Glenn & Carol Arthur Planetarium, a Visitors Center, the Carolyn Munro Wilson Picnic Shelter, numerous gardens, the Paul & Susie OConnell Conference Center, and an Aquaponics Lab. The observatory is home to one of the largest public telescopes in the southeastern US. as well as shows and star gazing events to over 1500 patrons for the park. The Blue Ridge Boutique Hotel, built in 1921, was the former Spruce Pine Elementary School. It is now operated by the non-profit Mayland Community College Enterprise Corporation and run by students attending the college. The students are sponsored by our work scholarship program. The Mayland Rapid Prototype Manufacturing offers services to local industries and advance manufacturing while providing educational training to Mayland Community College students in 3D design and drafting, 3D printing, rapid prototyping, computerized (CNC) machining, robotics, and mechatronics courses. These students are sponsored by our work scholarship program. For fiscal year 2023-24, the Mayland Rapid Prototype Manufacturing sponsored 4 students through the work scholarship program.
