Charting Careers Program Service Accomplishments July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021 During fiscal year 2021, Charting Careers mission to break the cycle of poverty and inequity in Annapolis through mentoring, college & career readiness, family partnership, and leadership for equity so youth chart their own course to fulfilling lives and careers became even more essential due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Despite numerous hurdles to programming during a pandemic, Charting Careers not only continued to provide results-oriented programming to 36 youth and their families living in poverty, the organization also expanded its reach. Program service accomplishments are detailed below, organized by core service area. Family Partnership. Throughout this past year, Charting Careers conducted extensive outreach to scholars and their families. Staff initiated numerous and ongoing care calls to check in, provide social support, and identify and address student and family needs. As a result, staff collected and delivered computers, desks, books, groceries, and other supplies; connected scholars and families to numerous community resources; and continued to build trust and relationships with families. These family partnership services also led to retention of participants during a time when so many other youth, sadly, became further disconnected from systems in which they were already inequitably served. Mentoring. The Charting Careers Mentoring community continued to serve students throughout the pandemic. Mentors went on walks with their scholars, masked up to go on outings, and learned how to connect over text, Facetime, Zoom, and more. Mentors were stable, supportive, dependable adults to scholars during this challenging year. For example, the mentor of two of high school seniors assisted both her mentees through their entire college application, selection, and scholarship application processes. In partnership with the Charting Careers staff, the mentor also helped make sure her mentees had the supplies they needed for their dorm rooms and classes. Another mentor, with staff and family support, successfully advocated for his mentee to return to in-person middle school as quickly as possible. The young man was struggling with virtual learning at home alone during the day and was originally told he would have to wait for the next round of openings. College & Career Readiness. The pandemic made the Charting Careers typical model of weekly, in-person programming challenging, so the organization pivoted to provide weekly, virtual check-ins for students, virtual career panels and vision board nights, and periodic outdoor group activities (e.g., a visit to the Maryland Science Center). Throughout the year, many students received virtual tutoring, including eight elementary students who read books virtually each week with their tutors. In May 2021, Charting Careers held its annual Scholarship & Awards Celebration and awarded a $1,500 scholarship to four scholars, including all three of its graduating seniors who are now attending college! Leadership for Equity. The Charting Careers Executive Director established and co-leads the Collaborative Supporting Youth, a group of nonprofits working together to ensure community youth thrive. During the pandemic, this group was pivotal in helping bring more resources to communities most in need. As a result of Charting Careers advocacy for scholars, the organization was awarded a contract with Anne Arundel County Public Schools Office of Equity. The contract provides funds for Charting Careers to build Community Equity Hubs in the highest need neighborhoods in Annapolis as well as continue its mentoring, college & career readiness, and family partnership programming with existing scholars and families.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2020 – Jun 30, 2021Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$171.6KCommunity Support and Programming
