  • Pet Foster Care for Vulnerable Owners

    Pause4Paws, Inc. is a Tulsa, Oklahoma nonprofit that arranges short term foster care for pets while their owners, who are experiencing homelessness, mental illness or addiction, receive urgent inpatient medical, mental health, or substance abuse treatment. Pet ownership has often been a barrier for individuals to accept available inpatient care because these individuals do not want to abandon their pets. Our foster services are limited to pet owners who have been referred by a social services or health care provider dedicated to helping individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness or addiction. Through our services, individuals who might not otherwise receive treatment, are given a chance at a healthier, safer, and more productive life. In 2024, we had 149 intakes and provided pet foster care for 129 unique individuals. These individuals were referred to us from over 30 different social service and healthcare organizations. Pause4Paws is a crucial link in the continuum of care for pet owners with mental illness, addiction and homelessness. Every pet who passes through our program is vaccinated and spayed/neutered, as needed, through one of our many partner veterinarians. In providing this service, we ensure that pets are returned to their owners in compliance with both city ordinances and best practices for pet healthcare. Providing this basic vet care is crucial to our work. We also provide collars, leashes, quality pet food, and other needed supplies when they are returned to their owner.
