Teacher Support and Development Program
TEACHERS - Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP), Instructional Coaching and Alternative Certification. Most teachers graduate school with student loan debt, and Black men have significantly more debt than their white counterparts. This burden often leads men to leave the profession. SLRP pays off the principal amount of student debt held by practicing teachers over a five-year period. For fiscal 2024 sixteen men were directly supported by this program and approximately 400 elementary school students benefited from them remaining in the classroom. An instructional coach visits each teacher's classroom to critique their teaching methods to improve student learning and participation. Alternative Certification is a program that run for 3 months each summer to prepare a college student for certification as a teacher.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2023 – Jun 30, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$279.9KScholarships and Support for Educators
COLLEGE - Scholarships, Student Teaching Stipends and Internships, Leadership Coaching and Non-traditional Pilot Program for Licensure - In an effort to offset the financial burden their education, Black Men Teach offers up to $20,000 scholarships to its participants. These scholarships are provided to men who are active participants in our program and are paid over four years. To qualify, students provide BMT with transcripts, confirming their class status, current course schedules, academic credits and fee statements. BMT offers these as "last dollar" scholarships. In the fiscal 2024, thirteen received scholarships. Student teaching, required to earn a degree and become a licensed teacher, is a significant financial burden for students. Because this activity is full time, for a period of 12 to 16 weeks, it precludes the student from earning outside income from a full or part time job. Therefore, many students leave the teaching track at this late stage because of this burden. BMT assists its teaching candidates by providing a stipend or paying for their internship during this part of their education. In fiscal 2024, twenty student teachers and interns benefited from this program as did approximately 500 elementary school students who were exposed to a Black male teacher. Leadership coaching is available to all college students who are in the BMT program. This training assists them with leading in a classroom. The Non-traditional pilot program assists a college student stay in school to study elementary education while providing them with an in-class job while going to school.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2023 – Jun 30, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$200.6KHigh School Educator Training Academy
