Agricultural Training and Food Preservation
Through our on the ground organization in Uganda the Preserve International team carries out trainings in 28a agronomic best practices as well as safe and effective food preservation and storage techniques. We primarily work with women's farm groups in and around the Bidi Bidi Refugee camp in Yumbe, Uganda. We work with Ugandan based Sparky Social Enterprises to provide our partners with Sparky Dryers, a solar and bio-fuel powered food dehydrator that can extend the life of produce from days to months, and even years. This empowers subsistence farmers not only with a means of securing healthy food for their families year round, but also provides a more secure means of revenue generation through the sale of preserved food throughout the year. This is especially advantageous during the dry season when food is scarce and thus fetched a higher price in the market. Preserve International, through its on-the-ground organization in Uganda, trained over 300 smallholder farmers, primarily women and refugee-led groups in the Bidi Bidi Settlement and surrounding areas of Yumbe District. Trainings included techniques in solar dehydration, water bath canning, and improved storage practices to reduce post-harvest loss. The organization deployed Sparky dryers, a locally designed solar and biofuel-powered food dehydrator, to help preserve seasonal harvests like mangoes, tomatoes, and leafy greens. These efforts enabled participants to preserve food for household nutrition and generate year-round income by selling dried goods during the off-season. In 2024, Preserve International launched a Train-the-Trainer model, equipping 15 lead trainers from refugee and host communities with deep knowledge of food preservation and storage techniques. These trainers then supported over 25 community-based agricultural groups, expanding reach and reducing dependence on outside facilitation.
