Programs
Program 1 [2020]
Extend conversations about public education into the community through local volunteers, including collaboration with stakeholders such as school boards, education associations, school superintendents, teachers, parents, students, local and statewide associations, and other groups. Outreach also includes organizations in other states working to support public education, and nationwide organizations monitoring and researching privatization. Fostering citizen participation in a statewide conversation about our students, our educators, our schools, and our state builds a stronger Arizona with increased engagement in the importance of public education. Teams of public education supporters northern, central, and southern Arizona extend outreach in their communities by initiating dialogue and exchanging information of interest to local residents. This personal outreach constitutes a key component of SOSAZNs commitment to neighborhood public schools.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$144.8KProgram 2 [2020]
Develop and deliver webinars, workshops, forums, discussions, and presentations that inform a wide variety of audiences about the conditions and opportunities for public education throughout Arizona. During 2020, SOSAZN has organized and delivered 9 online Speaking of Schools discussions featuring nationally prominent speakers and reaching thousands of viewers around Arizona. The SOSAZN Native Outreach Coordinator hosted speakers on education topics of interest to the Native American community, and SOSAZN Latino Outreach Coordinator hosted online Charlas to discuss education topics of interest to the Hispanic community, both with hundreds of viewers and participants monthly. In addition, SOSAZN delivered more than 50 online webinars in English and Spanish covering equity, public school funding, and privatization. Our blog posts reached thousands of readers with information about the history of privatization.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$144.8KProgram 3 [2020]
Developing, aggregating, organizing, and disseminating research, resources, and information relative to public education in Arizona. Focusing on under-resourced communities, the Network has become a statewide authority on ways that funding is drained from public education budgets, and how structural inequities in funding formulas disadvantage poor, immigrant, Native American, and rural communities. Our research has included detailed, nonpartisan information about how school funding works in Arizona, the history of education privatization, how less advantaged communities are hurt by cuts to public school funding and diversion of funds to private schools, information about litigation and court decisions affecting public school funding, and information about how the legislative process works.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$96.5K
