    In 2020, Tech Equity Collaborative held more than 40 virtual events and 4500 event participants, volunteers bankded 4,568 calls in support of the Historic Measure Proposition 15 and collected 1,386 signatures on the November ballot. The organization responded to the Covid-19 pandemic by partnering with TechExchange to get laptops to students and their families, advocated for paid sick leave for all workers in San Jose and fought for policies to address the existing affordability crisis. Following the passage of the Tenant Protection Act of 2019, Tech Equity Collaborative created tenantprotections.org, a tool for California renters to understand their new rights and get legal support in the face of unlawful evictions and rent increases. This was built in partnership and ACCE and Code for America's San Francisco Brigade, becoming our first major project in policy implemntation. Tech Equity Collaborative created educational materials and educated more than 5,000 voters wth election resources, with more than 3,000 people reading its Proposition 22 article. We also advised tech companies to take positions on progressive legislation, with Postmates and Salesforce endorsing Proposition 15 Postmates and Pantheon endorsing AB 1436, renter and mortgage moratorium in the face of Covid-19.

  • Tech and Housing Equity Initiative

    WE FOCUSED ON UNDERSTANDING INEQUITIES IN AND AROUND TECH AND EXPLORING WAYS TO CLOSE THE GAPS. WE BUILT SUPPORTED RESEARCH THAT IDENTIFIED KEY DISPARITIES IN CONTRACT WORK AND BROUGHT THOSE LEARNINGS TO THE PUBLIC AND OUR PARTNERS. USING OUR CONTRACT WORKER DISPARITY PROJECT AS A TEMPLATE, WE LAUNCHED AN INITIATIVE TO INVESTIGATE THE INTERSECTION OF TECH AND HOUSING: HOW TECH TOOLS ARE BEING USED TO ENCODE BIAS IN TENANT SCREENING, ACCELERATE THE CORPORATIZATION OF HOUSING STOCK, AND ENABLE OPAQUE ALTERNATIVE HOME FINANCING OPTIONS. WE ALSO EXAMINED EXISTING ECONOMIC JUSTICE POLICIES AND EXPLORED HOW WE COULD STRENGTHEN THEIR IMPACT. WE KNOW THAT ANY LAW IS ONLY AS GOOD AS ITS IMPLEMENTATION. TO SUPPORT THE CA TENANT PROTECTIONS, ACT OF 2019 WE LAUNCHED THE TENANT PROTECTIONS CALCULATOR, THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE ANTI-GOUGING RENT CALCULATOR IN CALIFORNIA.
