KRAS Cancer Advocacy and Education Program
IIn 2024 KRAS Cancer Connect d b a KRAS Kickers invested deeply in professional conference engagement and advocacy to ensure that patients with KRAS and other RAS cancers were represented at the highest levels of oncology. As members and participants in leading professional societies including ASCO AACR SITC and IASLC we were recognized as a consistent trusted voice for the KRAS community. Within these arenas the KRAS Kickers name has become synonymous with patient empowerment: when research leaders clinicians or industry stakeholders discuss KRAS they know our community is present.Our Director and volunteers attended these conferences not to recruit patients but to educate build awareness and break down barriers between science and survivorship. We participated in poster sessions roundtables and networking events always bringing the voice of patients directly into the research ecosystem. These engagements ensured that trial designers pharmaceutical partners and oncologists heard first-hand the needs and priorities of patients navigating KRAS and other RAS mutations. At the same time we distilled new insights into plain-language educational updates and shared them widely through Facebook groups newsletters YouTube sessions and open community forums.We also developed and distributed thousands of reviewed educational materialsbooklets postcards stickers and conference handoutsthat carried accurate accessible information about KRAS and RAS cancers. These were conversation starters and learning tools designed to empower patients and their families in clinic visits and community discussions. Our advocacy extended through cross-nonprofit collaborations where we joined forces with partner organizations to amplify shared goals in biomarker awareness equitable access to research and survivorship support. KRAS Cancer Connect d b a KRAS Kickers hosted open-access webinars where leading clinicians and researchers spoke directly with patients. These sessions gave participants the rare opportunity to hear from experts at the cutting edge of oncology and to ask questions in real time. Our role was to ensure those answers did not remain locked in scientific jargon but were translated into clear practical insights that patients and families could apply to their own care.We emphasized not just what to ask but what to listen forhow to recognize key details map choices within a decision-tree of options and apply that understanding in conversations with ones own doctor. Researchers frequently remarked on the depth of understanding and curiosity shown by our community; patients were not passive recipients of information but engaged partners shaping informed decisions for life while living with cancer.Beyond virtual sessions we organized onsite lab visits at Johns Hopkins and Moffitt Cancer Center where patients observed science in action met investigators and asked candid questions about research. We also convened a KRAS Kickers community event in Charlotte NC building connection and confidence as people navigated rapidly evolving options. These experiences demystified the research process reduced barriers to understanding clinical trials and helped patients see themselves as active participants in the research ecosystem rather than passive recipients of care. Our separate peer support group remains private and unrecorded to protect confidentiality.Approximately $79,000 supported expert speakers platforms and tools moderator support travel and content development in 2024. KRAS Cancer Connect d b a KRAS Kickers believes patients lived experience is as valuable as scientific expertise. In 2024 we provided stipends to patients participating in scientific and medical meetings recognizing both the financial burden of treatment appointments and the value of their time and insights. These stipends ensured patients could engage fully in education and advocacy without additional hardshipand more importantly affirmed that their contributions matter.We also supported moderators and peer leaders with stipends for sustaining our community: sharing updates from conferences and webinars translating research into plain language guiding discussions and ensuring accuracy across channels. This created a vital looppatients attend and learn; moderators communicate and amplify; the wider community receives timely trustworthy information.No clinicians or researchers were paid or provided honoraria. We flipped the script by investing directly in patients and peer leadership centering the people most affected by KRAS and other RAS cancers.
