Cardinal News Community Journalism
Cardinal News began its first full year of operation with an editor and two reporters on staff, along with a group of 8-10 freelancers. During the year, Cardinal gained support from the Danville Regional Foundation to staff a reporter in Danville; the Genan Foundation to staff a reporter in Bristol; and a gift from The Secular Society to hire an audience engagement editor. In addition to hosting a website and publishing a daily newsletter, Cardinal added two new products: a weekly newsletter and a weather newsletter. The Institute for Nonprofit News named Cardinal a finalist in the Community Champion Award contest for its coverage of flooding in Buchanan County. LION Publishers named Cardinal as a finalist in its New LION Business of the Year contest. Other notable stories included coverage of hospital finances, nursing shortages, small nuclear reactors, and the state's rationing of Narcan. We also created a Speaker Series and held events that brought in the governor, a Silicon Valley congressman, and the head of the National Association of Manufacturers. Through our journalism, we continue to provide independent information to the people of our communities, and to elevate their stories to Virginians living elsewhere.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$494.9K
