Urogynecology Leadership Fellowship
Medicine for Humanitys (MfH) Urogynecology Leadership Fellowship continues as the 2nd program of its kind in East Africa. Beginning in the 2022-23 Academic Year, there will be a new designation of the Urogynecology Fellowship as a formal part of the postgraduate medical education curriculum at Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST).-Our second Fellow, Dr. Onesmus Byamukama, is in his first year of support and training in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. -MfH funded Dr. Byamukamas travel and participation in the 8th Annual International Society of Obstetric Fistula Surgeons (ISOFS) Conference in Maputo, Mozambique in Oct. 2022. In September 2022, Medicine for Humanity (MFH) in concert with Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST) department of Obstetrics & Gynecology conducted a surgical program for the treatment of obstetrical fistula and pelvic floor disorders (PFD) in Mbarara, Uganda. Our team of 14 medical volunteers in concert with the dedicated MUST faculty triaged over 85 patients and ultimately performed 47 surgical obstetrical fistula and pelvic floor disorder procedures.In addition to the clinical service, some highlights include: The procurement, organization, and hand carry delivery of over 800 pounds of surgical equipment and supplies by the MFH team to Uganda. A vigorous bidirectional educational exchange between the Ugandan and American based trainees and faculty. Support and training for the burgeoning Urogynecology Leadership Fellowship which is now in sponsorship of its 2nd trainee. Continuation of the training of MUST nursing in the peri-opeartive arena which includes surgical scrub support which is not a routine part of the host surgical support. The Urogynecology Fellowship is designated as a formal part of the postgraduate medical education curriculum at Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST). -Our second Fellow, Dr. Onesmus Byamukama, graduated Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery completed the Fellowship in August 2024. Dr. Byamukama is currently on staff at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.-MfH funded Dr. Byamukamas travel and participation in the 49th Annual International Urogynecology Association (IUGA) Conference at the World Forum Centre in Singapore.
