AANHPI Community News Service
The Yappie, Inc. is a Delaware nonprofit corporation that operates as an online news service designed to serve AANHPI communities across the U.S. The Yappies content is produced by an editorial team consisting of 8 active editors and writers, all of whom are students or recent college graduates with journalism backgrounds. The corporations founders, Board of Directors, and officers have also worked at prominent news outlets (e.g., Politico, Axios), AANHPI advocacy groups (e.g., OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates), think tanks (e.g.,Council on Foreign Relations, CSIS), and various government bodies. The Yappies newsroom produces three categories of content: newsletter briefings, hard news stories, and feature-length articles. Newsletter briefings collate and analyze recent policy developments affecting AANHPI communities. Hard news stories cover events with major policy implications for AANHPIs and are normally published in the immediate aftermath of said events. Lastly, feature-length articles are in-depth examinations of larger, longer-term policy issues relevant to AANHPI communitiesespecially those that have yet to receive significant attention. 2023 was an active year for The Yappie. We published over 25 newsletters, featuring not just summaries of the latest news but also analyses from our writers including creative new newsletter sections covering, for instance, the actions of freshmen AANHPI Congresspeople following the 2022 midterm elections. This number hit our target of sending out one newsletter every two weeks to our email subscribers. We also delivered over 20 other features and hard news stories this year. This output is in part thanks to a new payment system that we instituted toward the end of 2022.Notably, in May, we also delivered a limited series of longform features, with in-depth analyses of historical and policy issues affecting AANHPIs, such as the complicated legacy of Asian representation in Hollywood and how Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders incorporate their advocacy on climate change and nuclear issues into their art. We also partnered with the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) to co-curate/publish a series of articles from their Voices program, which supports youth journalism. 2023 also saw us complete our first sponsorship with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which began back in 2022. This experience has helped us learn how to put together and pitch sponsorship offerings to foundations and other potential corporate partners. We were also fortunate to be one of 58 news organizations serving communities of color across the U.S. to benefit from the Borealis Philanthropys Racial Equity in Journalism Fund, which provided $25,000 toward our journalism. As part of contributing back to this philanthropic community, our staff also volunteered to help judge the 2023 Gold Futures Challenge, which we won the previous year. With some of our grant funds, we were also, for the first time, able to help subsidize some ofour staffs logistics, food, and travel costs of attending major journalism and AAPI-focused conferences including The Asian American Foundations Heritage Month gala, AAJAs summer convention, and a conference organized by Harvards Asian American network. These events have helped our staff build up connections within the AANHPI community that will prove important to growing The Yappies reach and support. The Yappie will continue to build on this strong progress in 2024.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$7.5K
