Orca Conservancy

Programs
Program 1 [2020]
2020 was a year of positive growth and change for Orca Conservancy. While COVID unfortunately shut down some in-person programs and events, Orca Conservancy used this time of change to invest and double-down in the leadership needed to help protect the southern resident killer whales. Orca Conservancy brought on a full-time salary for the executive director, and focused on recruiting strong board director leadership with experience in finance, development, marketing, and conservation across diverse industries.Key Program Highlights in 2020: Orca Conservancy weighs in on important Washington state and national LEGISLATION AND POLICY that impacts the Southern Resident killer whales such as providing comments on draft legislation, reaching out to government representatives about policy and legislation, and ensuring that Southern Resident killer whales and the places upon which they depend have a voice. We do this through mobilizing our supporters and through a volunteer Policy/Legislative Advocate. AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE) FOR ORCAS uses strategically placed hydrophones within the Salish Sea to not only listen for whale calls, but more importantly to determine the distinct calls of the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whale population. AI for Orcas is funded by Microsoft and the Orcasound Hydrophone Network. Orca Conservancy and Orcasound are partners on this project. The goal is to use this data to identify when SRKWs are nearby and alert the United States Navy, Washington State ferries, container ships, and recreational boaters to slow vessels down, thereby decreasing vessel noise. The data will be shared for scientific purposes and will be used to safely identify ailing orcas in need of treatment to help with the timely delivery of medications and food.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$4.5KGeneral Mission-Related Initiatives
