Lightcone Research Initiative
Lightcone Research: Our primary activity is applied research aimed at safeguarding humanity's long-run prospects. Staff and collaborators investigate questions at the intersection of artificial-intelligence alignment, institutional decision-making, economics, and long-term risk. We:Generate original scholarship through theoretical and empirical projects published as working papers, technical blog posts, and research reports. Operate shared research infrastructure, including the LessWrong and Alignment Forum online platforms, that enables thousands of external scholars to exchange ideas, vet results, and launch joint projects.Host intensive workshops and targeted experiments that pressure-test promising approaches and translate abstract insights into tools groups and individuals can apply immediately.Collaborate with outside laboratories, universities, and think tanks to refine methods, replicate findings, and accelerate the flow of useful knowledge across disciplines.Through this combination of research and infrastructure-building, we equip the people working on humanity's "crucial century" problems with the insights and tools they need to steer civilization toward a broad, flourishing future.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2024 – Dec 31, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$714.1KFlexHEG Research Workshop
FlexHEG Builders: During 2024 we received a grant of $54,060 to design and organize a two-day research workshop (scheduled for early 2025 at FAR Labs, Berkeley) that will convene ~30 investigators (eight funded R & D teams plus external AI-policy, chip-design, and verification specialists) to accelerate hardware-enabled governance (FlexHEG) research for safe, advanced AI. Pre-event work included setting shared IP terms, curating breakout research agendas, and coordinating preliminary design-choice studies so that, at the workshop, participants can refine experimental road-maps, prototype priorities, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. Outputs will include openly licensed technical breakouts, draft design documents, and a networked research community positioned to pursue empirical validation of FlexHEG mechanisms.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2024 – Dec 31, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided––
