In the small towns, suburbs and inner cities we serve, we continue our journey to provide quality healthcare until every person made in Gods image has experienced the best health today, hope for tomorrow, and Gods love that endures forever. An example of how our team cares for our community can be shown in the following story:A kind and generous heart is only evident in a persons actions. When Marlene moved to the Sierra Care Center at Adventist Health Sonora, Fred, her partner of more than 27 years, not only lavished Marlene with gifts and attention, but he also frequently treated her team of caregivers to special meals like home-cooked lasagna and spaghetti, Covers cookies, and other treats. They treated her like gold, Fred explains about the team of nurses and aides who took care of Marlene in Unit 6 at the Sierra Care Center. They gave her massages and did her hair every day. They gave her kisses. We couldnt have asked for more. I just wanted to show my appreciation. Fred would bring Marlene a fresh bouquet of flowers every week. When Marlenes roommate turned 105, he brought her a gift of flowers and candy. The roommate, who had wanted to live to 104, told him she did not want to celebrate her birthday, but he could go ahead and leave the flowers and candy. Those old folks were a hoot, Fred recalls. Fred visited with Marlene every day. In fourteen months, he only missed five days, mostly due to fishing a pastime that he and Marlene had once enjoyed together. Many years ago, in Livermore, before Fred and Marlene were an item, Fred was working to fix Marlenes sisters fence. He told her he would knock a few hundred dollars off the price, if he could ask Marlene on a date. Thats how the story began and the two were together from that moment on.In 2017, Fred bought a house for Marlene in Tuolumne County. I gave her the keys on her birthday, he says. His friends would ask, What are you going to buy for her next year? And Fred would say, Nothing. Im broke. Their life together included fishing, taking their dog for neighborhood walks, trips to the casino and dinners out. Marlene really got a kick out of feeding the deer that would come up on their porch. But, as Marlenes condition due to Alzheimers and Parkinsons declined, Fred could no longer care for her at home. Together they had a nice routine of daily visits. And then COVID hit. I couldnt be with her since March, Fred explains. But they adapted to the situation and would visit by the glass doors at the back of the building. With Fred outside the glass and Marlene safely on the other side, a caregiver would provide Marlene with a phone so that they could talk through the glass. Freds neighbors would often accompany him and offer their prayers and support for Marlene. In her last five days, arrangements were made so that Fred could stay at her side, which he did, even though she could no longer speak and had given up eating or drinking. After his love had passed, Fred presented the Sierra Care Center with a plaque reading: A Nurses Prayer of CompassionLord, Help me to bring Comfort where there is pain,Courage where there is fear,Hope where there is despair,Acceptance when the end is near,A touch gentle with Tenderness, Patience,And Love.Nurses at unit 6 Marlene passed away at the young age of 70, leaving Fred with a heart full of memories and leaving the team at the Sierra Care Center filled with love and appreciation for this endearing couple. This is just one example of how our team of professionals care for our patients and our community. This summer, the Family Medicine Residency Rural Training Track welcomed its inaugural class of four resident physicians. Over the next two years, these physicians will complete hands-on residency training and deliver primary care services at the Family Medicine Residency Medical Office in Sonora. As an accredited graduate medical education program, the residency emphasizes the unique healthcare needs of rural communities. A new cohort of four resident physicians will join the program annually. Also launching this fall is the Pacific Union College (PUC) Associate of Science in Nursing program at Adventist Health Sonora, welcoming its first class of 20 students. This hybrid program combines online instruction from PUC faculty with in-person clinical rotations at Adventist Health Sonora, allowing students to pursue nursing careers while staying connected to their local community. These programs are building a pipeline of homegrown healthcare professionals so we can serve the needs of our community, now and into the future, said Greg McCulloch, president of Adventist Health Sonora. One of our core beliefs as an organization is that our rural community deserves accessible, quality healthcare. Programs like these are vital for rural communities, where residents often face significant barriers to care due to chronic shortages of providers and nurses. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has officially designated Tuolumne County as a Medically Underserved Area because of a shortage of primary care health services. These new initiatives build on Adventist Health Sonoras growing portfolio of workforce development programs. The certified nursing assistant (CNA) and medical assistant (MA) training programs have already made a measurable impact, providing entry-level pathways into healthcare. Since 2022, 32 CNAs have graduated from the program, and 10 MAs completed the first MA cohort earlier this year. A new MA cohort is set to begin this fall.We see our workforce training programs as a win-win, said Tyler Newton, operations and service line executive at Adventist Health Sonora. They help us meet the growing healthcare needs of our region while providing local talent with opportunities to grow their careers and continue caring for the community they love. Together, these programs represent Adventist Health Sonoras deep and continuing investment in community-based solutions that address the unique healthcare needs of rural residentsand build a healthier future for all.Websites for our community benefit information: https://www.adventisthealth.org/about-us/community-benefit/GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2024 – Dec 31, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$285.9M
