Diverse Performances and Community Engagement
PERFORMANCES: Throughout the season, PBO presented a diverse range of programming that included historically informed performances of Baroque masterpieces, contemporary works for period instruments, and innovative interdisciplinary collaborations. Our activities reached thousands of audience members across multiple venues in the San Francisco Bay Area and through an East Coast tour, furthering our mission to enrich, educate, and inspire through historically informed performance.CONCERTS Set 1: "Garden of Good & Evil" (October 16-21, 2023)Conducted by Richard Egarr and featuring countertenor Tim Mead:-Program featured Handel works including excerpts from Giulio Cesare, Admeto, and Judas Maccabaeus-Contemporary works by Errollyn Wallen and Tarik O'Regan from the Ancestor projectSet 2: "Dido's Ghost" (November 13-December 2, 2023)A major interdisciplinary collaboration:-US Premiere of Errollyn Wallen's new opera Dido's Ghost incorporating Purcell's Dido and Aeneas-Conducted by John Butt, directed by Frederic Wake-Walker-Featured an outstanding cast including Nicole Heaston, Matthew Brook, and Nardus Williams-Additional performances of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas as a standalone workSet 3: "Six Centuries of Christmas Music" (December 3-9, 2023)Richard Egarr led a chronological journey through holiday music:-Works ranging from Taverner to Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky-Featured both the PBO Chamber Players and full ChoraleSet 4: "Double Espresso" (January 30-February 3, 2024)Featuring Richard Egarr and Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya as harpsichord soloists:-Bach's concertos for two harpsichords (BWV 1060, 1061, 1062)-Telemann's Concerto a7 in F and a minor, and the Alster OvertureSet 5: Mendelssohn & Beethoven (April 8-13, 2024)A venture into the Romantic repertoire:-Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with soloist Shunske Sato-Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony on period instrumentsCOMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION ACTIVITIESSF Music Day (October 15, 2023)PBO's Chorale Octet under the direction of Valrie Sainte-Agathe presented a program of works by female composers spanning the 17th to 21st centuries:-Works by Cozzolani, Aleotti, Perucona, Cesis, and de la Cruz-Contemporary pieces by Caroline ShawJews & Music (JAM): 400th Anniversary of Rossi's Songs of Solomon (December 3-4, 2023)A scholarly and musical exploration:-Collaboration with JAM Scholar-in-Residence Francesco Spagnolo-Program featuring works by Salamone Rossi juxtaposed with pieces by MonteverdiCoffee & Cake Concerts (March 5-8, 2024)-Community outreach series featuring Richard Egarr and PBO Chamber Players performing Bachs Brandenburg Concertos 3, 4, and 5-Weekday morning concert time catered to needs of older audiences and young familiesBerkeley Festival and Exhibition (June 9-16, 2024)Chamber music showcase featuring Telemann's Paris Quartets and works by Boismortier and RebelTOURSEast Coast Tour (July 10-24, 2023)Under the direction of Richard Egarr, PBO presented two distinct programs across prestigious venues including Tanglewood, Caramoor, and Newport's The Breakers:Program 1: A semi-staged production of Handel's Acis & Galatea (1718 version)Program 2: "New Music for Old Instruments" featuring works by Handel, Biber, and the East Coast premiere of Mason Bates' Appalachian AyreThis tour featured internationally renowned soloists including Nicholas Mulroy, Hera Hyesang Park, Dashon Burton, Isaiah Bell, and Daniel Moody, alongside stage direction by Aria Umezawa.Impact and Outcomes1. Artistic Excellence: By engaging world-class soloists and presenting meticulously researched performances, PBO maintained its position as America's leading period-instrument ensemble.2. Audience Development: Programming presented at multiple venues (Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, Bing Concert Hall at Stanford, First Church in Berkeley, and others) expanded our geographic reach across the Bay Area, while our East Coast tour extended our national presence.3. Educational Impact: Our Coffee & Cake Concert series provided accessible entry points to Baroque music for new audiences, with performances in community venues in Piedmont, San Francisco, and Palo Alto.4. Innovation: The season balanced core baroque repertoire with new works written for period instruments (Bates, Wallen, O'Regan) and the adventurous production of Dido's Ghost, demonstrating our commitment to keeping historical performance relevant and vibrant.5. Diversity Initiatives: Programming highlighted works by female composers both historical (Cozzolani, Aleotti) and contemporary (Wallen, Shaw), contributing to a more inclusive representation in classical music.6. EDUCATIONA TWO-YEAR ONESCHOOL PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN PBO AND MISSION HIGH SCHOOL WAS LAUNCHED TO AUGMENT THIS SCHOOLS MUSIC PROGRAMS BY SHARING, CREATING, AND PERFORMING CLASSICAL MUSIC WITH STUDENTS. THE SFUSD BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVED THE MOU AND A BILINGUAL MEMBER OF THE PHILHARMONIA CHORALE HAS BEEN HIRED BY THE DISTRICT TO STAFF THE PROGRAM. TWENTY-NINE CLASSES WERE SERVED IN 2022. IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS ELSEWHERE WERE CURTAILED DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS.YOUNG ARTIST TRAINING PROGRAMS INCLUDED TWO FREE PUBLIC MASTERCLASSES AT THE SAN FRANCISCO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC BY SHUNSKE SATO, VIOLIN, IN PERSON AND LIVE STREAMED, AND BY WILLIAM SKEEN, CELLO.
