Venice Canals Preservation Initiatives
The Venice Canals are on the National and City of L.A. Registry of Historical Places and serve as a wildlife preserve protecting vital coastal wetland habitat. Recognized for their unique cultural historical and scenic value in Southern California the VCA focuses on preserving these qualities. In 2024 the VCA donated funds to the Coalition for Safe Coastal Development a 501c4 organization in support of public education and environmental advocacy initiatives aligned with the VCAs mission to protect the environmentally sensitive and historic Venice and Grand Canals. As part of its mission to protect preserve and enhance the historic and environmentally sensitive Venice Canals the VCA conducts ongoing environmental improvement and maintenance activities in public areas. These include landscaping at the Canal gateways planting and maintaining native saltbush hedges upkeep of environmentally appropriate plants along the Dell Avenue Bridges maintenance of the Coastal Access Pathway and historic bridges installation and resupply of Mutt Mitt dog waste stations and providing security patrols in key public spaces. In addition to environmental preservation the VCA promotes community engagement and education about the historic and ecological importance of the Venice Canals. In 2024 the VCA organized public events that fostered awareness safety and appreciation for the canals unique character and habitat. These included the July 4th Celebration the Holiday Boat Parade a Halloween event for children outdoor movie nights the Annual General Meeting of Members the Annual Holiday Toy Drive and various other community gatherings.
