Program 1 [2020]
Display & Interpretation - Ocean Wise effects conservation of aquatic life through display and interpretation through its aquarium facility. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization, which had significant financial, social and market impact. Despite the aquarium operations being closed for over 6 months, it still had over 154,000 guests and 55,000 members who visited to be engaged, amazed and inspired with respect to marine life and marine issues. Our exhibits and interpreters provide information about animals, their habitats, environmental and conservation issues.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$14.9MProgram 2 [2020]
Education - The COVID-19 pandemic forced school children to stay home. Ocean Wise helped ease the transition by retooling its Online Learning platform to meet the needs of educators, students and parents and by delivering education-based video courses, activities and virtual visits with ocean experts. Our youth service initiative, funded by the Government of Canada's Canada Service Corps program expanded to include a new Direct Action program, providing 24 full-time, three-month placements for young professionals across Canada, both in-field and virtual working with mentors from 20 national partners in ocean and freshwater research and conservation.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$3.4MProgram 3 [2020]
Research - Ocean Wise has a number of ongoing research programs with both onsite & field components. This involves cetaceans (including killer whales and belugas), marine mammals (sea otters, stellar sea lions, walruses and harbor seals), and specific research programs that include Ocean Pollution Research and BC Cetaceans Sightings network. In November, the Government of Canada announced important investments to improve the Whale Report Alert System, an innovative way to minimize the impact of boats on whales.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$2.3M
