Aina Restoration and Community Engagement
Aina (traditional agriculture and aquaculture) Restoration. Ohalahala Loko Ia (fishpond) and wetland taro and gardens. To date we have restored about 220ft of Ohalahala Fishpond wall conducting monthly workdays with a core group of Molokai cultural experts. Every quarter we hold workdays that are open to the public with about 15 community members per event participating. 1. We have Cleared 1 acre of ancient rock walled wetland taro plots (loi), which includes restoring two rock-walled terraces, the existing water ditch path, and reopened direct access to the stream. We planted 150 taro seedlings which is on track with our goal to open loi and plant 120 taro huli every six months-thus, in constant rotation and at least 240 huli harvested every year. This equals about 600 pounds of taro, most which will be processed into poi. 2. Mala (garden). We continue to clear land and plant, expanding our garden as well as enclosing it with 4-6ft high chainlink fence to protect it from invasive ungulates, pig and deer-due to an island-wide drought, which have been decimating our produce. We have distributed free over 1,500 pounds of produce from the garden. We provided over 200 meals to our visitors, sourced from our garden, surrounding lands, and fishpond.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$22.6KEducational Outreach and Community Events
Education. Each year we work with groups from all the four elementary schools on Molokai, as well as the two secondary schools, Molokai Intermediate and High School. Services provided to the Molokai Schools include multiple outreach visits to classrooms and larger school assemblies, traditional makahiki games training, and field trips to Ohalahala Fishpond, Honouliwai Stream and the gardens. We also co-host with student visits via Molokai Digital Bus (mobile science and technology bus). We hosted 16 field trips with 437 students and 147 teachers. We hosted 12 community group events to work in the fishpond and gardens, a total of 105 participants of all ages, more than double from the previous year. This year for the first time we hosted three muli-day events, with camping and meals provided on-site. We provided over 200 meals to our visitors, most all of it sourced from our garden, surrounding lands and fishpond. To facilitate these visits, we created a protective (tents) meeting space and camping area adjacent to the gardens. We broke ground in December 2023 on a two-stall restroom with sink to service visiting school field trips, and other visiting community groups and events (expenses so far for restrooms on septic system $11,351 supplies, $10,150 contracted labor).GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2023 – Dec 31, 2023Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$37.7KHawaiian Multimedia Education Projects
Multimedia Projects. 1. Hui O Kuapa produced Hookupu: A Hip Hop anthology of Hawaiian History to major music platforms (streams to date: Apple Music 25,000; Spotify 40,000; YouTube 20,000). Two music videos and a teachers guide were created to accompany the release. In July 2023 the album won a Na Hoku Hanohano Award (Hawaiian Music Grammy), Hip Hop Album of the Year. We performed live at the televised awards show, first Hip Hop group performance in history. We also performed the album at La Hoihoi Ea Summer Festival and at The East West Center at the University of Hawaii. The Curriculum is now used in many DOE and University classrooms around Hawaii. The Hookupu team did virtual visits to Lahaina Intermediate School after the fire.
