Education Services
The Carroll Center’s Education Services department collaborates with 98 local school districts across Massachusetts and neighboring states to ensure that the needs of all children who are blind or visually impaired are met. Licensed Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) and Certified Orientation Mobility Specialists (COMS) teach students how to safely navigate with a cane, utilize assistive technology to improve organizational skills and complete schoolwork, and effectively communicate and self-advocate for themselves. We work in partnership with the student’s local school district to ensure that children can stay in their community school with access to the same instruction and materials as their sighted peers. Our staff also ensures students can fully participate in their classes through the use of Braille, large print books, low vision devices, and assistive devices. This work occurs during the academic school year with our staff partnering with communities across Massachusetts and New Hampshire.GeographiesMassachusetts, USA;New Hampshire, USA;Rhode Island, USA;Delaware, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedEducation,Eye diseasesChildren and youth,People with vision impairments480$1.6MCommunity
Community Services teaches clients how to thrive with vision loss or blindness within their own communities. Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) provide clients with the skills necessary to safely travel on their own. COMS work out in the community of the blind and visually impaired clients that the Carroll Center serves including their home, school, workplace, and neighborhood. The goal of this program area is to teach and train the blind/visually impaired individual to safely navigate their environment. The Carroll Center is only one of two organizations in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who provide this service to the blind.GeographiesMassachusetts, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedHuman services,Eye diseasesPeople with vision impairments,Adults,Children and youth635$957.9K
