Community Conservation
BNRC’s Community Conservation Program (CCP) provides free public access for group and solitary outdoor, non-motorized activities at over 50 conservation reserves across the region, as well as a year-round slate of free, Interpretive Science educational programs for all ages. Some BNRC programs are held on site at our reserves, others take place at locations such as libraries, museums, parks and community fairs and festivals. CC programs include themed, beginner-friendly hikes led by English and Spanish speakers; children’s programs at the Pittsfield public library; family StoryWalks; self-guided naturalist hikes; video guides; online LEARN programs; enhanced interpretative trail signage; Community Science opportunities; and volunteer training. BNRC also loans outdoor equipment for free, and offers the Nature Backpack program, where community members with a library card can check out a backpack equipped with supplies to enjoy the outdoors. BNRC distributes printed maps and guides as well as on-line resources in Spanish and English, and two new, bi-lingual print and online guides: 1) Berkshire County Trails for All, a guide to ADA accessible trails, and 2) Everybody Can Hike, a user-friendly guide for new hikers conceived in partnership with Latinas 413, Berkshire Immigrant Center, and Berkshire Language Management. BNRC also offers on-line programs which can be accessed in real time or through our YouTube channel.GeographiesBerkshire County, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedAgriculture, fishing and forestry,Community and economic development,Environment,Health,Sports and recreationAge groups––Land Conservation
BNRC works to safeguard forests, fields, and farms critical to the Berkshires’ rural character, scenic beauty, and climate resilience. BNRC also prioritizes landscape connectivity: the Berkshire and Taconic Highlands of Western Massachusetts link the Green Mountains of Vermont to the Hudson Highlands of New York, creating an extensive landscape corridor that provides habitat for wildlife and plants, supports climate mitigation, and protects critical water resources in Southern New England. BNRC currently cares for over 26,000 acres of conserved land in Berkshire County and regularly partners with state, municipal, local, indigenous, and nonprofit entities to conserve and steward many times that land area throughout the region. BNRC maintains 50 reserves in Berkshire County and 60+ miles of trails that are free and open to people with all levels of hiking experience, including several physically accessible trails.GeographiesBerkshire County, MA, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedAgriculture, fishing and forestry,Environment,HealthAge groups––
