Schools Exploring Engineering, Design, and Sustainability (SEEDS)
Through a 1:1 matching grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, we are partnering with Springfield Public Schools, a large, underserved urban school district, to facilitate experiential learning in the classroom, field trips to the Hitchcock Center's “Living Building”, and professional development for teachers. Third grade students and teachers explore the intersection of engineering, technology and design and their critical role in addressing environmental challenges such as generating renewable energy, maintaining freshwater supplies, and mitigating climate change.GeographiesSpringfield, MA, USADatesAug 1, 2022 – Jul 31, 2025SourceUser-generatedEducation,Environment,ScienceChildren3.6K$444KInspiring Creative Problem-Solving in Our Watershed
A grant from the NOAA B-WET program supports this project on watershed-based education in the Connecticut River Valley in the context of climate change. It includes long-term engagement of students in classroom and field based learning, and professional development support for teachers, with a focus on the elementary grades. The project focuses on climate change impacts including the increased frequency of intense precipitation events, which is taxing aging infrastructure for managing stormwater, exacerbating flooding and erosion, damaging roads and bridges, overwhelming sewage treatment systems, and reducing water quality in natural water bodies.GeographiesAshfield, MA, USA;Deerfield, MA, USA;Whately, MA, USA;Sunderland, MA, USA;Conway, MA, USADatesAug 1, 2023 – Jul 31, 2025SourceUser-generatedEducation,Environment,ScienceChildren200$133.5KHealthy Air Network
A grant from the EPA Environmental Justice Community Problem Solving Program to the Hitchcock Center for the Environment will enable the Healthy Air Network to expand and deepen community-based air pollution monitoring, training and education in the Connecticut River Valley region. This project will add rural communities to the urban partners already engaged in the network, incorporate extreme heat as a related climate risk, and support youth engagement and action. The project will use an integrated approach to the Valley as an “interconnected airshed” since particulate and ozone pollution can travel far from their sources, regional weather patterns influence both air quality and extreme heat, and effective solutions require communities to work together. For example, increasing greenspace (through planting trees, native species, pollinators, and/or gardens) and improving regional public transit can simultaneously improve air quality, reduce heat impacts, and improve health. The project will build on an existing Hitchcock Center program that supports teams of middle/high school youth in environmental action projects, and will create an action planning toolkit to support youth projects on the intersection of climate change, air quality, extreme heat, and health. The project will also expand support for the resident advisor model for air sensor maintenance and community outreach, strengthen public communication via the Network’s website and social media, and use network-wide data reporting and analysis to identify trends and areas of concern for air quality and extreme heat.
