SEE SCHEDULE O:JUMPSTART HAD 4,054 CORPS MEMBERS WHO DELIVERED ITS EVIDENCE-BASED EARLY EDUCATION PROGRAM DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO 13,035 CHILDREN IN ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, CONNECTICUT, GEORGIA, ILLINOIS, MASSACHUSETTS, MISSISSIPPI, MISSOURI, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, WASHINGTON, AND WASHINGTON, DC. AT THE END OF THE PROGRAM YEAR, THE CORPS MEMBERS WILL HAVE SUPPORTED KINDERGARTEN READINESS FOR CHILDREN BY BUILDING THE LANGUAGE AND LITERACY SKILLS NEEDED FOR SCHOOL SUCCESS. IN FY18 91% OF JUMPSTART PARTICIPANTS IN THE EVALUATION SAMPLE MADE GAINS IN LANGUAGE AND LITERACY ON THE SCHOOL SUCCESS CHECKLIST. SCHOOL SUCCESS: JUMPSTART SESSIONS TAKE PLACE TWO DAYS PER WEEK, FOR TWO HOURS EACH TIME. CORPS MEMBERS AND CHILDREN READ CORE STORYBOOKS AND PARTICIPATE IN TARGETED AND INTENTIONAL ACTIVITIES BASED ON THESE STORIES. EACH SESSION REVOLVES AROUND A CORE STORYBOOK AND ONE BOOK SERVES AS THE FOCUS FOR TWO SESSIONS. SESSION PLANS ARE ORGANIZED IN SIX UNIT THEMES: FAMILY, FRIENDS, WIND AND WATER, THE WORLD OF COLOR, SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS, AND THINGS THAT GROW AND USE THE FOLLOWING ROUTINE:WELCOME: CHILDREN TRANSITION TO JUMPSTART FROM THEIR PREVIOUS ACTIVITY. CHILDREN BUILD ALPHABET KNOWLEDGE THROUGH EXPLORATION OF NAME CARDS AND OVER TIME DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF MEANING AND USE OF PRINT. READING: CHILDREN AND CORPS MEMBERS ENGAGE IN A SHARED READING EXPERIENCE. CORPS MEMBERS USE A VARIETY OF STRATEGIES TO ENGAGE CHILDREN IN THE STORY, HIGHLIGHT KEY VOCABULARY, AND CHECK FOR COMPREHENSION OF THE TEXT. CIRCLE TIME: CHILDREN PARTICIPATE BY SINGING SONGS, PLAYING WORD AND LETTER GAMES, AND READING POEMS. THE WHOLE-GROUP LEARNING EXPERIENCE BUILDS A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AMONG CHILDREN AND ADULTS.CENTER TIME: CENTERS ARE SET UP WITH MATERIALS AND ACTIVITIES THAT SUPPORT CHILDRENS LANGUAGE AND LITERACY SKILL DEVELOPMENT. ACTIVITIES ARE INSPIRED BY THE UNIT THEME AND CORE STORYBOOK, DEEPENING CHILDRENS UNDERSTANDING OF THE BOOK AND PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO USE STORY VOCABULARY.LET'S FIND OUT ABOUT IT: A SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY DESIGNED TO BUILD CHILDREN'S CONCEPT KNOWLEDGE AND VOCABULARY. HERE, CHILDREN HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE NEW IDEAS AND INFORMATION, LEARN ABOUT OBJECTS AND THEIR USE, AND UNDERSTAND HOW THINGS WORK. SHARING & GOODBYE: CHILDREN TALK AND LISTEN TO OTHERS SHARE THEIR FAVORITE SESSION ACTIVITIES IN A LARGE GROUP SETTING. CORPS MEMBERS USE OBJECTS OR EXAMPLES OF CHILDREN'S WORK FROM CENTER TIME AND RICH VOCABULARY TO SUPPORT THE CONVERSATION.FUTURE TEACHERS: JUMPSTART DEVELOPS FUTURE TEACHERS AND LEADERS BY INCREASING CORPS MEMBERS' EARLY CHILDHOOD KNOWLEDGE AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS. CORPS MEMBERS RECEIVE 30 HOURS OF TRAINING BEFORE ENTERING THE CLASSROOM AND UP TO 60 HOURS DURING THEIR YEAR OF SERVICE. DURING THIS TRAINING, CORPS MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES THAT DEEPEN THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PRACTICE, CHILDREN'S LANGUAGE AND LITERACY DEVELOPMENT, ACTIVE LEARNING, CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT, AND FAMILY INVOLVEMENT. CORPS MEMBERS LEARN HOW TO DELIVER JUMPSTART'S CURRICULUM DURING TRAININGS THAT FOCUS ON JUMPSTART'S TARGET DOMAINS AND SKILLS, IMPLEMENTING THE JUMPSTART ROUTINE, AND UNDERSTANDING AND USING JUMPSTART'S READING STRATEGIES. IN ADDITION, CORPS MEMBERS CONTINUE BUILDING AND STRENGTHENING THEIR SKILLS TO IMPLEMENT JUMPSTART SESSIONS THROUGH APPLICATION AND PRACTICAL LEARNING DURING IN-SERVICE TRAININGS HELD THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.FAMILY INVOLVEMENT: JUMPSTART RECOGNIZES THAT FAMILIES ARE CHILDREN'S FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT TEACHERS. WE SEEK TO ENGAGE FAMILIES AS PARTNERS IN SUPPORTING THEIR CHILDREN'S SCHOOL SUCCESS AND PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO EXTEND LEARNING INTO THE HOME WHENEVER POSSIBLE. CORPS MEMBERS FORM RELATIONSHIPS THAT BUILD TRUST WITH FAMILIES THROUGH ONGOING, CONSISTENT COMMUNICATION. THIS COMMUNICATION HAPPENS FACE TO FACE WHEN CORPS MEMBERS MEET FAMILY MEMBERS AT EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTERS, AS WELL AS THROUGH FORMAL, WRITTEN COMMUNICATION AT LEAST ONCE PER MONTH. JUMPSTART ALSO STRIVES TO BUILD CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE JUMPSTART SESSION AND CHILDREN'S LEARNING AT HOME. BY ADDING TRAINED ADULTS TO PRESCHOOL CLASSROOMS, JUMPSTART PROVIDES MORE INDIVIDUALIZED INTERACTIONS WITH CHILDREN AND ENRICHES THE OVERALL LANGUAGE ENVIRONMENT IN CLASSROOMS. DELIVERY OF JUMPSTART'S CURRICULUM IS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING KEY PRINCIPLES: (1) UTILIZE CULTURALLY COMPETENT, DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PRACTICES; (2) ENGAGE CHILDREN IN PLAYFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCES; (3) BALANCE ADULT-LED AND CHILD-INITIATED LEARNING; (4) HOLD HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL CHILDREN; AND (5) SUPPORT CHILDREN'S DEVELOPMENT IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY FEEL SAFE, VALUED, RESPECTED, SEEN, AND HEARD. TYPICALLY, TEAMS OF FOUR TO SIX JUMPSTART CORPS MEMBERS SERVE IN ONE PRESCHOOL CLASSROOM THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR, DEVELOPING THE LANGUAGE, LITERACY, AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SKILLS OF THEIR PARTNER CHILDREN. TEAMS OF CORPS MEMBERS CONDUCT TWO-HOUR "JUMPSTART SESSIONS" TWICE PER WEEK WITH THEIR FULL PARTNER CLASS. CORPS MEMBERS TYPICALLY SERVE 2-5 HOURS OF ADDITIONAL INDIVIDUAL CLASSROOM SERVICE (ICS) PER WEEK, IMPLEMENTING INDIVIDUALIZED ACTIVITIES WITH CHILDREN AND SUPPORTING TEACHER-LED ACTIVITIES. JUMPSTART SESSIONS HAVE A CONSISTENT ROUTINE SO CHILDREN KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHAT TO DO, WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR DEVELOPING SELF-REGULATION SKILLS. SESSIONS ARE A BLEND OF LARGE AND SMALL GROUP LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND INDEPENDENT PLAY. TO START, CORPS MEMBERS INTRODUCE CHILDREN TO THE MESSAGE, THEMES, AND VOCABULARY OF THAT DAY'S SESSION. A SMALL GROUP SHARED READING EXPERIENCE HELPS CHILDREN DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF VOCABULARY AND CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND BEGIN TO COMPREHEND CONNECTIONS BETWEEN CHARACTERS' MENTAL STATES AND THEIR BEHAVIOR. READING IS FOLLOWED BY A LARGE GROUP LEARNING TIME CENTERED AROUND AN INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY THAT BUILDS CHILDREN'S CONCEPTUAL KNOWLEDGE AND CONTENT VOCABULARY. NEXT, IN CENTER TIME, CHILDREN MAKE CHOICES, EXPERIMENT, PRACTICE NEW OR PREVIOUSLY LEARNED SKILLS, AND PLAY; CORPS MEMBERS ENGAGE CHILDREN IN CONVERSATIONS AND ACTIVITIES THAT SUPPORT ORAL LANGUAGE AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT. FINALLY, EACH SESSION CLOSES WITH AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN TO SHARE ABOUT THE DAY'S ACTIVITIES WITH THEIR PEERS. CHILD AND MEMBER IMPACTIN 2022-23, JUMPSTART HAD 2,118 CORPS MEMBERS WHO DELIVERED ITS EVIDENCE-BASED PROGRAMMING TO 6,652 CHILDREN IN 14 STATES PLUS WASHINGTON, DC. CORPS MEMBERS REDUCE THE CHILD TO ADULT RATIO IN EVERY JUMPSTART CLASSROOM, ALLOWING CHILDREN TO RECEIVE AN INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING EXPERIENCE THAT HELPS THEM TO DEVELOP NURTURING RELATIONSHIPS WITH CARING ADULTS. ON AVERAGE, A MAJORITY OF JUMPSTART CHILDREN MAKE GAINS OVER THE COURSE OF THE PROGRAM YEAR IN LANGUAGE AND LITERACY SKILLS DETERMINED TO BE PREDICTORS OF KINDERGARTEN READINESS AND SCHOOL SUCCESS. THROUGH THE DELIVERY OF PROGRAMMING TO CHILDREN, JUMPSTART IS ALSO EXPANDING THE PIPELINE OF QUALIFIED, DIVERSE TALENT PURSUING CAREERS IN EARLY EDUCATION.
