Programs
Preschool
Preschool operates from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. There are two fully equipped preschool classrooms, each accommodating 15 children, and a beautiful outdoor play space. Our program helped develop the RI Early Childhood Education Standards and was designated a Preschool Center of Excellence by the national Early Learning Reading First Program. MLKCC Preschool utilizes an active learning curriculum that fosters exploration and learning through natural play and interactions with the environment, events, and other people. In addition to English language learning, literacy and math, other program enhancements focus on supporting social and emotional wellness. Physical activity, environmental education, and outdoor experiential learning are part of every school day. Children also participate in violin lessons, art, cooking classes, composting, and age-appropriate STEAM learning. Children receive two complete, healthy meals and snacks each day. Good nutrition is especially important for the children we serve, as most of our families are low-income. We know that hunger and poor nutrition have adverse consequences for young children, including inhibiting physical and mental growth and academic functioning. MLKCC believes a nurturing educational environment can lift children and adults from poverty and open the door to opportunity. We work to ensure that our predominantly low-income, diverse students are as prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond as their higher-income peers. For many non-English-speaking children, after only a few weeks of immersion in MLKCC’s Preschool, they are speaking in full sentences and singing songs in English. Even though our costs continue to grow, we have not increased the base cost of childcare. Most MLKCC childcare families cannot pay the $170 weekly fee for Preschool. Some qualify for state subsidy; but that safety net is not available to undocumented families or those whose income is deemed too high, though it is too low to pay childcare and living expenses. There are very few childcare options for these families, as Head Start is often full. MLKCC provides scholarship to those families in need, allowing families to pay what they can on a sliding scale, from $5 -$40/week, and helping parents continue working.GeographiesNewport County, RI, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedEarly childhood educationChildren,Infants and toddlers30–After School
