Center for Pastoral Education
Since 2009, the Center for Pastoral Education at JTS has championed a unique model of multifaith accredited clinical pastoral education (CPE) in a Jewish seminary, with a broad influence through partnerships with other seminaries and with direct service providers in New York City. JTS is recognized as having a multifaith education program of the highest caliber. Training in pastoral care and counseling includes coursework, internships and small group supervision. Students complete clinical pastoral education requirements either during the full-time summer intensive or part-time over the academic year. Seminary students of all religions are drawn to our reputable program. They learn to build healing relationships with clients of all faiths and backgrounds. The Center for Pastoral Education has honed techniques for melding religious texts, values, and traditions with best practices in the field of psychology. Participants learn the essential skills for meeting people on their own spiritual terms, without judgement. They provide professional care and counseling to people suffering from physical, spiritual, or emotional pain. Our approach is intentional, grounded in the shared understanding that one’s ability to be present with people during crisis and change, drawing on spiritual dimensions of care, is core to one’s success as a religious leader. Students here serve a wide diversity of clients who may not otherwise be offered spiritual care as part of care and wellness. We partner with hospices, nursing homes, elder-care agencies, prisons and prison reentry programs, and addiction and mental health clinics. The thousands of hours of chaplaincy provided by our interns are extraordinarily meaningful and helpful to their clients’ well-being. The Center is advancing its new (and nationally it is one-of-a-kind) mental health and addiction recovery CPE program. We also offer remote CPE training for active clergy who seek further professional development and who can complete their requirements where they live.GeographiesNew York, NY, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedSpirituality,Judaism,Interfaith,Social work education,Human services,Psychology and behavioral scienceAdults,Persons with substance use disorder(s),People with diseases and illnesses,People with disabilities,Incarcerated people1K–
