DURING THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR, EDUCATION THROUGH MUSIC (ETM) WORKED TO SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT, WHILE BUILDING CAPACITY AMONG SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE MUSIC PROGRAMS. ETM USED MUSIC TO SUPPORT THE EDUCATION OF NEARLY 20,000 STUDENTS THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH 53 UNDER-RESOURCED NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS IN ALL FIVE BOROUGHS OF NEW YORK CITY.ETM PROGRAMS PROVIDED STUDENTS WITH COMPREHENSIVE, SKILLS- AND STANDARDS-BASED MUSIC INSTRUCTION THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR; MUSIC TEACHERS WITH ONGOING TRAINING, OVERSIGHT, AND MENTORING; PRINCIPALS WITH PROGRAM MANAGEMENT GUIDANCE; AND SCHOOL COMMUNITIES WITH OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENGAGEMENT. ETM ALSO HELPED BRING QUALITY MUSIC EDUCATION TO OVER 23,000 ADDITIONAL CHILDREN THROUGH ADVISING LICENSED AFFILIATE ORGANIZATIONS IN LOS ANGELES, COLORADO AND BOSTONAS 2021-22 SAW A RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM AND IN-PERSON LEARNING, ETM'S CRITICAL MUSIC TEACHER TRAINING, MENTORING, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO OUR TEACHERS TO KEEP THEM ON THE FRONT LINES OF MUSIC EDUCATION IN NEW YORK CITY. AS THE TEACHING LANDSCAPE CONTINUOUSLY SHIFTED - FROM REMOTE TO HYBRID TO IN-PERSON LEARNING - ETM PROVIDED OUR TEACHERS WITH RELEVANT AND TIMELY TRAINING AND TOOLS TO LEAD SUCCESSFUL AND WELCOMING CLASSROOMS.CORE MUSIC INSTRUCTION AND ENRICHMENTSTUDENTS IN ETM PARTNER SCHOOLS RECEIVED WEEKLY CORE MUSIC CLASSES DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. TEACHERS INCORPORATED AGE-APPROPRIATE SONGS AND INSTRUMENTS SUCH AS: XYLOPHONES, HAND PERCUSSION, AND GUITARS. MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTION INCORPORATED MUSIC TECHNOLOGY IN STATE-OF-THE-ART LABS. INSTRUCTION FOLLOWED ETM'S GRADE-LEVEL MUSIC CURRICULUM, WHICH ALIGNS WITH NEW YORK STATE AND NATIONAL STANDARDS. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING A FOUNDATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN MUSIC, MUSIC TEACHERS EMPLOYED INTEGRATION STRATEGIES AND COLLABORATED WITH CLASSROOM TEACHERS TO REINFORCE COGNITIVE SKILLS THAT SUPPORTED STUDENT LEARNING IN OTHER SUBJECTS, SUCH AS ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, HISTORY, MATH, AND SCIENCE.EACH SCHOOL PERFORMED A WINTER AND SPRING CONCERT, WITH A CULMINATING PERFORMANCE OF THEIR WORK. BY PERFORMING IN THESE CONCERTS, STUDENTS SHOWCASED THEIR NEW SKILLS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO PEERS, PARENTS, AND THEIR WIDER SCHOOL COMMUNITIES. ENSEMBLES AND ENRICHMENTTHIS YEAR SAW THE RETURN OF IN-PERSON ENSEMBLE REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES, ALLOWING FOR A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE FROM 10 ENSEMBLES IN 2020-21 TO 33 ENSEMBLES IN 2021-22. SWITCHING TO HYBRID AND IN-PERSON LEARNING IN 2021-22 ALLOWED FOR 9 BANDS (UP FROM 5 IN 2020-21), 8 ORCHESTRAS (UP FROM 2 IN 2020-21), AND 16 CHOIRS (UP FROM 3 IN 2020-21). MUSIC TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTETM DELIVERED OVER 100 HOURS OF TRAINING TO MUSIC TEACHERS. FIVE DAYS OF INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS BEFORE THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR STRENGTHENED MUSIC TEACHERS' KNOWLEDGE OF PEDAGOGY AND MUSIC METHODOLOGIES; ADDRESSED ETM'S BENCHMARKS AND APPROACH TO INTEGRATION; OFFERED SPECIFIC GUIDANCE FOR TEACHERS OF ENSEMBLES AND VARIOUS AGE GROUPS; AND PROVIDED INSIGHT INTO HOW TO BEST SERVE THE COMMUNITIES OF ETM PARTNER SCHOOLS. ADDITIONAL SESSIONS WERE HELD FROM SEPTEMBER THROUGH JUNE. AT THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, EACH MUSIC TEACHER WAS ASSIGNED AN ETM MENTOR - ONE OF OUR INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISORS - WHO PROVIDED ONE-ON-ONE GUIDANCE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.BUILDING CAPACITY TO SUSTAIN PROGRAMSPRINCIPALS RECEIVED ONE-ON-ONE GUIDANCE ON PROGRAM MANAGEMENT, ASSESSMENT, BUDGET PLANNING, AND IDENTIFYING FUNDING RESOURCES. ETM PROVIDED ONGOING SUPPORT TO PRINCIPALS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO PROMOTE BUY-IN FOR MUSIC PROGRAMS. ETM STAFF AND MUSIC TEACHERS BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH SCHOOL PERSONNEL AND ENGAGED PARENTS. ETM'S MODEL IS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED WHEN THE SCHOOL HIRES A MUSIC TEACHER FULL-TIME. EVALUATION EACH YEAR, PROGRAM STAFF MEMBERS CONDUCT REGULAR SITE VISITS TO EACH SCHOOL AND MUSIC TEACHER; OBSERVE AND EVALUATE MUSIC TEACHERS USING A RUBRIC TO RATE PLANNING AND PREPARATION, CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT, INTEGRATION, AND INSTRUCTION; AND DISCUSS OBSERVATIONS AND OFFER SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT. OUR OBSERVATION RUBRICS ALIGN WITH THE DANIELSON FRAMEWORK, THE SYSTEM USED BY THE NYCDOE. NATIONAL ACTIVITIESBEYOND CORE PROGRAMS IN NYC, ETM CONTINUED WORK TO ADVANCE ITS MODEL NATIONALLY THROUGH ITS LICENSED AFFILIATE PROGRAMS. ETM CONTINUED TO ADVISE ETM-LA, THE ORGANIZATION LICENSED SINCE 2006 TO REPLICATE OUR FULL PARTNER SCHOOL MODEL IN THE LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY. PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS 2023-24DURING THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR, EDUCATION THROUGH MUSIC WORKED TO SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT, WHILE BUILDING CAPACITY AMONG SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE MUSIC PROGRAMS. ETM DELIVERED MUSIC CLASSES TO OVER 18,000 CHILDREN AT 50 SCHOOLS IN LOWER-INCOME NEW YORK CITY NEIGHBORHOODS, PRIMARILY SERVING UNDERSERVED STUDENTS. OF THE STUDENTS SERVED, APPROXIMATELY 23% HAD SPECIAL NEEDS, 16% WERE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, AND 86% WERE LIVING BELOW THE POVERTY LINE. THESE 50 PARTNER SCHOOLS WERE LOCATED IN ALL FIVE NEW YORK CITY BOROUGHS: 32 BRONX, 4 BROOKLYN, 4 MANHATTAN, 9 QUEENS, AND 1 STATEN ISLAND, ALLOWING US TO WORK WITH MORE THAN 18,000 CHILDREN EACH WEEK, WHICH INCLUDED 30+ BAND, ORCHESTRA, AND CHORUS PROGRAMS. ETM'S PROGRAMS PROVIDED:- STUDENTS WITH ACCESS TO COMPREHENSIVE, SEQUENTIAL, AND SKILLS-, AND STANDARDS-BASED MUSIC INSTRUCTION AS WELL AS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS, SUCH AS BAND, ORCHESTRA, AND CHORUS.- MUSIC TEACHERS WITH ONGOING TRAINING, MENTORING, AND OVERSIGHT.- CLASSROOM TEACHERS WITH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.- PRINCIPALS WITH LEADERSHIP AND PROGRAM MANAGEMENT GUIDANCE.- PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN ABOUT MUSIC EDUCATION AND TO SEE THEIR CHILDREN PERFORM. TEACHERS INCORPORATED AGE-APPROPRIATE SONGS AND INSTRUMENTS SUCH AS: XYLOPHONES, HAND PERCUSSION, AND UKULELES. MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTION INCORPORATED MUSIC TECHNOLOGY IN STATE-OF-THE-ART LABS. INSTRUCTION FOLLOWED ETM'S GRADE-LEVEL MUSIC CURRICULUM, WHICH ALIGNS WITH NEW YORK STATE AND NATIONAL STANDARDS. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING A FOUNDATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN MUSIC, MUSIC TEACHERS EMPLOYED INTEGRATION STRATEGIES AND COLLABORATED WITH CLASSROOM TEACHERS TO REINFORCE COGNITIVE SKILLS THAT SUPPORTED STUDENT LEARNING IN OTHER SUBJECTS, SUCH AS ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, HISTORY, MATH, AND SCIENCE. EACH SCHOOL PERFORMED A WINTER AND SPRING CONCERT, WITH 25,750 PARENTS, STUDENTS, AND TEACHERS ATTENDING. BY PERFORMING IN THESE CONCERTS, STUDENTS SHOWCASED THEIR NEW SKILLS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO PEERS, PARENTS, AND THEIR WIDER SCHOOL COMMUNITIES.ENSEMBLES AND ENRICHMENTTHIS YEAR ETM CONTINUED TO SUPPORT THE ESTABLISHMENT AND GROWTH OF 30+ ENSEMBLES WITH 28 ENSEMBLES PARTICIPATING IN THIS YEAR'S CONCERTS: 10 BANDS, 5 ORCHESTRAS, 10 CHOIRS, AND 3 INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES (GUITAR AND UKULELE). THESE GROUPS WERE LED BY ETM-TRAINED AND -SUPPORTED MUSIC TEACHERS AND TYPICALLY REHEARSED 1-3 TIMES PER WEEK, BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL, WITH ADDITIONAL SMALL GROUP LESSONS. PARTICIPATION IN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS, PART OF ETM'S "EXTENDED DAY," RESULTED IN OVER 900 STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THESE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR A TOTAL OF OVER 1,700 SESSIONS/HOURS. MUSIC TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTETM PROVIDED 90+ HOURS OF TARGETED TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO 52 TEACHERS, BEGINNING WITH OUR ANNUAL ETM ACADEMY, 60 HOURS OF MANDATORY TRAINING FOR ALL ETM MUSIC TEACHERS, HELD AUG. 21 - AUG. 30, 2023. THESE WORKSHOPS FOCUSED ON SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING, CONCERT AND PERFORMANCE ELEMENTS, AND CREATING INCLUSIVE CLASSROOMS, AMONG OTHER TOPICS. ETM ALSO HELD 25 ADDITIONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS OVER THE COURSE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. THESE SESSIONS INCLUDED TEACHING MUSIC TO SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS, ELL STRATEGIES IN THE MUSIC ROOM, AND BUCKET DRUMMING LINE AND BODY PERCUSSION, AMONG OTHER TOPICS. THIS YEAR, ETM ACHIEVED A 100% TEACHER RETURN RATE.ETM PROGRAM STAFF ALSO PROVIDED ONGOING SUPPORT AND MENTORING TO TEACHERS, VISITING EACH ETM TEACHER ON SITE AT LEAST ONCE PER MONTH, AND HOLDING REGULAR CHECK-INS.BUILDING CAPACITY TO SUSTAIN PROGRAMSPRINCIPALS RECEIVED ONE-ON-ONE GUIDANCE ON PROGRAM MANAGEMENT, ASSESSMENT, BUDGET PLANNING, AND IDENTIFYING FUNDING RESOURCES. GRAMMY AWARD-WINNER GOSPEL SINGER ISRAEL HOUGHTON AND HIS WIFE, EMMY AWARD-WINNING POP ARTIST, ADRIENNE BAILON, VISITED AND SANG WITH STUDENTS AT PS 103 IN THE BRONX. ETM COLLABORATED WITH THE PERELMAN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER IN A FIVE-PART PERFORMANCE SERIES FEATURING PARTNER SCHOOLS FROM EACH BOROUGH THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. IN DECEMBER, ETM WAS FEATURED ON ABC 7 NEW YORK, PROFILING THE PARTNER SCHOOL PROGRAM, AS WELL AS ETM TEACHERS AND STUDENTS FROM PS 154 AND MS 419, BOTH LOCATED IN QUEENS.EVALUATIONEACH YEAR, PROGRAM STAFF MEMBERS CONDUCT REGULAR SITE VISITS TO EACH SCHOOL AND MUSIC TEACHER; OBSERVE AND EVALUATE MUSIC TEACHERS USING A RUBRIC TO RATE PLANNING AND PREPARATION, CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT, INTEGRATION, AND INSTRUCTION; AND DISCUSS OBSERVATIONS AND OFFER SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT. IN ADDITION, ETM ENGAGES METIS, A NYC-BASED RESEARCH AND EVALUATION FIRM SPECIALIZING IN P-12 EDUCATION AND ARTS EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT, TO EVALUATE THE PARTNER SCHOOL PROGRAM. METIS ADMINISTERED TEACHER, PRINCIPAL, AND FAMILY SURVEYS AT THE BEGINNING AND THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. PRELIMINARY FINDINGS FROM METIS'S INTERIM REPORT INDICATE THAT: 64% OF TEACHERS FELT THAT ETM STUDENTS IMPROVED THEIR ORAL EXPRESSIONS SKILLS SIGNIFICANTLY BECAUSE OF MUSIC CLASS; 80% OF TEACHERS FELT ETM PROGRAMMING SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED STUDENTS' CONFIDENCE; 65% IMPROVED CRITICAL THINKING; 65% IMPROVED FOCUS; 65% AUTONOMY/INDEPENDENCE; AND 61% PROBLEM SOLVING. 95% OF PARENTS REPORTED THAT MUSIC CLASS HELPED BUILD THEIR CHILD'S CONFIDENCE. 83% OF PARENTS ALSO SAID THAT IT IS "VERY IMPORTANT" THAT THEIR CHILD RECEIVE MUSIC INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOL. FINALLY, 85% OF ETM SCHOOLS SCORED ABOVE PREVIOUS YEAR'S NYS ELA TEST SCORES AND 98% SCORED ABOVE THE PREVIOUS YEAR'S NYS MATH TEST SCORES.NATIONAL ACTIVITIESBEYOND CORE PROGRAMS IN NYC, ETM CONTINUED WORK TO ADVANCE ITS MODEL NATIONALLY THROUGH ITS LICENSED AFFILIATE PROGRAMS.
