In 2020, CBMAA welcomed over 353,000 guests and presented several collection focus shows, and four major exhibitions including: Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal..., State of the Art 2020, North Forest Lights, and Ansel Adams in Our Time. Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal...was organized by the Portland Art Museum in Oregon. Combining familiar images from sports and advertising with histories of art and politics, conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas examines popular culture, and how art can raise awareness in the ongoing struggle for social justice and civil rights. Featuring 90+ artworks including photographs, sculptures, mixed media, and his well-known Branded series, Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal... is the first comprehensive survey of this acclaimed and award-winning artist's career. State of the Art 2020 was curated and organized by CBMAA to coincide with the opening of our sister institution The Momentary. This exhibition is the continuation of an exploration into contemporary art that began in 2014, when CBMAA presented State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now. The 61 individuals with over 100 artworks in State of the Art 2020 represented a cross-section of artists working today and their artwork was organized into thematic sections including world-building: creating real and fictional spaces; sense of place: investigating ideas of home, family, immigration, and more; mapping: connections to and relationships with landscapes and power, and temporality: the concept of time and how we perceive it. North Forest Lights, located in the museum's North Forest, was the first outdoor light experience commissioned by CBMAA. These five nighttime light and sound experiences explored the power of nature as a connecting and communicating force that can bring joy. It provided spaces for people to gather and enjoy the outdoors, while being transported by multi-media art and original music compositions. Ansel Adams in Our Time was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. For more than 50 years, Ansel Adams captured the breathtaking beauty of the United States in stunning black-and-white photographs, many of which have been frozen in a time gone by. This exhibition featured more than 100 of Adams' most iconic works like never before, displayed alongside nineteenth-century photographers and contemporary artists who both influenced, and were influenced by, the legendary American artist. In addition to admiring the photographs themselves, guests could explore the history and production of pre-digital photography through this unique exhibition.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$5.7MProgram 3 [2020]
