Tikkun Olam Makers
TOM: Tikkun Olam Makers (TOM) is a global nonprofit movement dedicated to designing and distributing open-source, radically affordable, and accessible assistive solutions for people with disabilities, the elderly, and underserved communities. By leveraging frugal innovation and collaborative, human-centered design, TOM brings together engineers, designers, and makers with "Need-Knowers" - individuals with firsthand experience of these challenges - to co-create solutions that do not exist in the market or are prohibitively expensive. TOM’s unique model documents and open-sources these designs, allowing anyone, anywhere to freely download and manufacture them using local resources, such as makerspaces and 3D printers. This distributed manufacturing approach reduces costs by 80-99%, making life-changing assistive technology accessible to those who need it most. Since its founding in 2014, TOM has built a global community spanning universities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and innovation hubs across 34+ countries, with over 1,200 solutions developed and counting.
