Program 1 [2020]
COVID Response: When COVID-19 hit the Bay Area in March 2020, it became clear that communities of color and low-income communities were disproportionately affected. With equity at the center of our initiatives, SVCF launched seven COVID-19 response funds, working with trusted partner organizations to support our community members facing the most challenging circumstances. With support from individuals, local government, corporations and partner foundations, SVCF raised $64 million to provide food, housing and financial assistance to more than 680,000 individuals and families across the Bay Area region. In total, SVCF and our fund-holders gave $244 million to COVID-19-related causes in 2020. Community Action Grants Program: In 2020, SVCF began leaning further into our racial and social justice work to achieve a more equitable Silicon Valley. In response to recommendations from our community partners, SVCF launched the Community Action Grants program, which uses a racial justice and equity lens to identify and support organizations that foster greater creativity and help build community and power to promote a just, equitable and inclusive Silicon Valley. The new grants program invests in organizations led by and serving people of color in the areas of arts and culture, environment, health, media and journalism, immigration, neighborhoods, faith, and civic participation. Early Childhood Development Strategic Initiative: As a community foundation with a long history of commitment to early learning, SVCF has a unique opportunity to spur greater momentum for action and investment in early care and learning in Silicon Valley. In 2020, SVCF began building upon the significant work of our Center for Early Learning and evolving those efforts into our new Early Childhood Development strategic initiative. Under this strategic initiative, we catalyze philanthropic investment, activate leadership, support action and learning, and expand public and private investment in early care and education to advance policies that support the optimal development of young children.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$2.7BCommunity Action Grants Program
Community Action Grants Program SVCF's Community Action Grants program funds local organizations led by people of color and allied organizations. In 2022, Community Action Grants totaling more than $3.2 million were awarded to 120 organizations across seven different issue areas: arts and culture, faith, neighborhoods, local journalism, civic participation, the environment, and health. Investing in Movement- and Power-Building SVCF is working to address structural inequalities and power dynamics in the community through grant funds supporting nonprofits serving people of color, people with low income, and immigrants, among others. Our programs include the California Black Freedom Fund and the LatinXCEL Fund. These funds were created to address unequal access to power and funding by intentionally providing unrestricted funds to nonprofit organizations that organize and serve people of color, build coalitions and advocate for public-policy changes. Encouraging General Operating Support for Nonprofits To help provide nonprofit organizations with the support they need to implement solutions to their communities' challenges as they deem most effective, SVCF encourages its donors to recommend grants that are for general operating support rather than for specific programs or outcomes. In 2022, SVCF distributed more than $369 million in general nonprofit operating support grants.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$4.2B
