Program for Women and Mathematics (WAM)
The Women and Mathematics Program (WAM) at the Institute for Advanced Study is an annual program with the mission to recruit and retain more women in mathematics. WAM aims to counter the initial imbalance in the numbers of men and women entering mathematics training as well as the higher attrition rate of female mathematicians compared to their male counterparts at every critical transition stage in mathematical careers. WAM encourages female mathematicians to form collaborative research relationships and to become active in a vertical mentoring network spanning a continuum from undergraduates to emerita professors, which provides support and reduces the sense of isolation experienced by many women in mathematics. While there are a number of women's programs targeted solely at undergraduates, or graduate students, or postdocs, very few programs provide the depth and breadth that come from simultaneously including features tailored for undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers from a broad spectrum of US institutions, all in one united community of scholars, as WAM does.GeographiesPrinceton, NJ, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedVocational post-secondary education,University education,Undergraduate education,Equal opportunity in education,Diversity and intergroup relationsAdults,Women and girls,Academics––IAS/Park City Mathematics Program (PCMI)
The IAS/Park City Mathematics Program (PCMI) is an outreach program of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). Held in Park City, Utah, PCMI is an intensive three-week residential conference that includes several parallel sets of activities aimed at different groups of participants across the entire mathematics community. These activities include: -program for mathematics researchers -short courses for graduate students -lecture series for undergraduate students -undergraduate faculty program -faculty workshop on rehumanizing mathematics -professional development and leadership program for teachers of grades 7-12 At the annual Summer Session, all of PCMI's programs meet simultaneously, pursuing individual courses of study designed to enrich participants in mathematical topics appropriate for their level, and participating in cross-program activities based on the principle that each group has something important to teach and to learn from the others. The rich mathematical experience combined with interaction among groups with different backgrounds and professional needs increases each participant's appreciation of the mathematical community as a whole and results in an increased understanding and awareness of the issues confronting mathematics and mathematics education today.GeographiesPark City, UT, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedEducation,MathematicsAdults,Academics––Summer Program in Social Science
The School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, has organized the Summer Program in Social Science (SPSS), which began as a 3-year pilot program in 2015 with grants from Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and the Wolfensohn Family Foundation. Click here to see an overview of the collective project initiated during the inaugural Summer Program in Social Science. Currently funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this innovative program takes place over a two-year cycle, beginning with a two-week session held in English in Princeton followed by one week at a collaborating institution, with continuous communication facilitated among the scholars throughout the two-year period. The program is led by Didier Fassin, James D. Wolfensohn Professor in the Institute’s School of Social Science. Designed to draw together twenty early-career scholars from countries in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, the program aims to enrich and expand the realm of the social sciences through the confrontation of different intellectual traditions and perspectives; to facilitate and enhance the dialogue between various scientific disciplines and communities; and to strengthen international networks across continents. Fellows pursue and present their own research projects during the program. This research is expected to be at an advanced stage of development so as to render discussions of its object, method and conclusions richer and intellectual interactions among the fellows more fruitful. Special attention is paid to local contexts of production and global modalities of circulation of knowledge, and the participants are invited to exchange their research experiences. The purpose is to constitute a genuinely international and interdisciplinary network of social scientists from the global South. The program is open to scholars from all social sciences, including anthropology, sociology, history, psychology, economics, law, and political science, as well as neighboring disciplines such as philosophy, political theory, and literary studies. All research themes are welcomed, and all transportation, meals and accommodation expenses for the participating scholars is covered.GeographiesPrinceton, NJ, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedEducation,Social sciencesAdults,Academics,People of African descent,People of Latin American descent,People of Middle Eastern descent,South African Community––
