THE HENRY ART GALLERY'S MISSION IS TO ENGAGE ALL PEOPLE IN THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF CONTEMPORARY ART AND IDEAS. FOUNDED IN 1927 AS WASHINGTON STATE'S FIRST ART MUSEUM ON THE CONVICTION THAT ART STIMULATES INQUIRY, FOSTERS KNOWLEDGE, AND BUILDS HEALTHY COMMUNITIES, THE HENRY IS THE REGION'S MUSEUM DEDICATED TO CONTEMPORARY ART, AND WE HAVE LONG TRADITION OF SUPPORTING ARTISTS AT EVERY STAGE OF THEIR CAREERS. EXHIBITIONS RANGE FROM INTIMATE PHOTOGRAPHY DISPLAYS DRAWN FROM THE MUSEUM'S EXTENSIVE COLLECTION TO LARGE-SCALE COMMISSIONED INSTALLATIONS BY LEADING CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. CREATIVE EXPERIMENTATION, DIVERSITY OF VOICES, AND ENRICHING VISITOR EXPERIENCES ARE CENTRAL TO THE HENRY'S MISSION. THE HENRY OFFERS FREE VISUAL ARTS EDUCATION FOR ALL AGES THROUGH EXHIBITION-RELATED TALKS, WORKSHOPS, AND OTHER PROGRAMS THAT HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF ART IN ENRICHING SOCIETY. AS A FREE MUSEUM AND A RESOURCE FOR ARTS AND CULTURE, THE HENRY LOWERS FINANCIAL BARRIERS TO ACCESS AND PROVIDES INVALUABLE PUBLIC BENEFIT TO SEATTLE'S RESIDENTS AND VISITORS. THE MUSEUM ENHANCES THE VIBRANCY OF SEATTLE'S CULTURAL LANDSCAPE, SUPPORTS EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS AND AIMS TO MAKE CONTEMPORARY ART ACCESSIBLE TO ALL. THE HENRY SERVED 54,355 VISITORS IN FY2024. FREE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS SERVED 2,432 PEOPLE. EIGHTY SCHOOL GROUPS AND COMMUNITY TOURS BROUGHT 1,302 STUDENTS AND YOUTH TO THE GALLERY. SERVICE ACCOMMODATIONS INCLUDE IN-GALLERY SENSORY TOUCH KITS, LARGE TEXT-SIZE OBJECT LABELS, CLOSED CAPTIONS AND TRANSCRIPTS FOR VIDEO CONTENT, AND AMPLE SEATING. PUBLIC TALKS ARE LIVE STREAMED WITH LIVE CAPTIONING, AND LISTENING DEVICES ARE AVAILABLE. WE ARE CURRENTLY PILOTING LIVE ASL INTERPRETATION FOR IN-GALLERY PROGRAMS. THE MUSEUM IS ADA-ACCESSIBLE, INCLUDING BRAILLE AND LOW-VISION SIGNAGE. A) REPRESENTATIVE EXHIBITIONSHANK WILLIS THOMAS: LOVERULES - FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF JORDAN D.SCHNITZER AND HIS FAMILY FOUNDATION FEATURED 90 WORKS SPANNING 20 YEARS OF THE ARTIST'S MOST ICONIC AND WELL-KNOWN ARTWORKS ACROSS A RANGE OF MEDIA, INVESTIGATING DIVERSE THEMES RELATING TO COMMODITY, IDENTITY, MEDIA, AND POPULAR CULTURE. RAL DE NIEVES: A WINDOW TO THE SEE, A SPIRIT STAR CHIMING IN THE WIND OF WONDER FEATURED FAUX STAINED GLASS SKYLIGHT INSTALLATIONS THAT TRANSFORMED THE MUSEUM'S LARGEST GALLERY SPACE INTO A GORGEOUS CONTAINER OF COLORED LIGHT. AS AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE, DE NIEVES'S INSTALLATION WAS A PORTAL TO AN ALTERNATIVE WORLD, INSPIRED BY THE POWER AND POSSIBILITY OF WONDER AND IMAGINATION IN DAILY LIFE. SOPHIA AL-MARIA: NOT MY BAG INCLUDED A RECENT TRILOGY OF FILMS AND NEW COLLAGES THAT GRAPPLED WITH THE VIOLENCE OF EMPIRE ACROSS INDIVIDUAL AND GENERATIONAL TIME SCALES, ANIMATING THE PERSISTENCE OF THE REBELLIOUS, CREATIVE SPIRIT AMID THE RUINS OF CRISIS. KELLY AKASHI: ENCOUNTERS EXPLORED THE MAPPING OF GEOLOGICAL AND ASTRONOMICAL TIMELINES TO LOCATE HUMANKIND IN THE NEAR INFINITE SCALE OF THE COSMOS FROM MICRO TO MACRO. A LARGE-SCALE VIDEO PROJECTED THE FUTURE COLLISION OF THE MILKY WAY AND ANDROMEDA GALAXIES ON THE BACK WALL OF THE GALLERY, WHILE THE SIDE WALLS PRESENTED ENLARGED IMAGES OF MICROSCOPIC CRYSTALLOGRAPHY. SCATTERED ABOUT THE GALLERY, A SERIES OF "FOLDED EARTH" SCULPTURES ERUPTED FROM THE FLOOR, UNFOLDING TO REVEAL LIFE SIZED, BRONZE SCULPTURES OF HANDS, OFTEN HOLDING DELICATE BRAIDS OF PORCELAIN AND GLASS. A/POLITICAL ROCKS AN EXHIBITION DRAWN FROM THE HENRY COLLECTION, EXPLORED THE ROLE LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY HAS PLAYED IN SHAPING EXPERIENCES OF THE AMERICAN WEST, PAYING PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO AMONG THE MOST SUPERFICIALLY BANAL AND APOLITICAL OF LANDSCAPE SUBGENRES: IMAGES OF ROCKS.MARTINE GUTIERREZ: MONSEN PHOTOGRAPHY LECTURE PRESENTED IMAGES FROM GUTIERREZ'S RECENT SERIES "BODY EN THRALL," IN WHICH THE ARTIST EMBODIES A BLONDE CHARACTER WHO ACTS ALONGSIDE MALE AND FEMALE MANNEQUINS TO EXPLORE THE LIMITS OF HER OWN EROTIC POWER. THE PRESENTATION WAS ORGANIZED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE HENRY'S ANNUAL MONSEN PHOTOGRAPHY LECTURE, WHICH BRINGS KEY MAKERS AND THINKERS IN PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICE TO THE HENRY. B) PUBLIC AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMSEXHIBITION ARTIST TALKS, LECTURES, PANELS, AND WORKSHOPS PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE COMMUNITY TO MEET THE ARTISTS FEATURED IN OUR EXHIBITION SEASON AND ENGAGE IN IN-DEPTH LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES ABOUT CONTEMPORARY ART LED BY UW FACULTY AND OTHER EXPERTS. ARTVENTURES OFFERS FREE, QUARTERLY, ONSITE AND ONLINE WORKSHOPS THAT DRAW FROM THEMES IN OUR EXHIBITIONS TO LINK SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN, FAMILIES, AND CAREGIVERS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPERIMENT WITH NEW MATERIALS AND MODES OF MAKING. THE HENRY TEEN ART COLLECTIVE CONNECTS UP TO 15 DIVERSE YOUTH FROM TEN REGIONAL SCHOOLS WITH INNOVATORS IN THE FIELD AROUND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING. PARTICIPANTS MEET WEEKLY DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR FOR ARTIST-LED WORKSHOPS, INDEPENDENT RESEARCH, COLLABORATIVE BRAINSTORMING, ART MAKING, AND CONVERSATIONS WITH ART PROFESSIONALS. PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE A $599 STIPEND. THE HENRY ART LIAISONS PROGRAM PROVIDES A PAID INTERNSHIP FOR UP TO SIX UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TO LEARN MUSEUM PRACTICES AND TAKE THE LEAD DEVELOPING GALLERY TOURS THAT THEY CONDUCT WITH A SOCIAL-JUSTICE LENS. HENRY ART LIAISONS ALSO FACILITATE SPECIAL TOURS FOR UNDERSERVED SENIORS TO INCREASE SOCIAL CONNECTION THROUGH INTERGENERATIONAL EXCHANGE.K12 TOURS INVITE SCHOOL GROUPS TO VISIT AND ENGAGE IN DIALOGUE THAT SPARKS STUDENTS' IMAGINATIONS AND CONNECT CONTEMPORARY ART TO THEIR CLASSROOM CURRICULUM. WITH A LOCATION ON THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON (UW) CAMPUS, A PERMANENT COLLECTION OF NEARLY 30,000 OBJECTS, AND THE ELEANOR HENRY REED COLLECTION STUDY CENTER, THE HENRY IS A KEY CULTURAL RESOURCE AND TRAINING GROUND IN THE VISUAL ARTS FOR K-20 STUDENTS, SCHOLARS, ARTISTS, AND GENERAL AUDIENCES. THE COLLECTION INCLUDES SIGNIFICANT HOLDINGS IN PHOTOGRAPHY, MID-19TH TO 21ST CENTURY PAINTING, WORKS ON PAPER INCLUDING EUROPEAN MASTER PRINTS, A TEXTILE AND COSTUME COLLECTION, AND A GROWING BODY OF WORKS IN NEW MEDIA FORMATS. THE COLLECTION'S SEARCHABLE ONLINE DATABASE, ACCESSED THROUGH THE HENRY'S WEBSITE, IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE MANY POINTS OF ENTRY TO INFORMATION AND IMAGES ASSOCIATED WITH COLLECTIONS OBJECTS. ANNUALLY, MORE THAN 4,300 RESEARCHERS ACCESS OUR COLLECTION ONLINE. BY APPOINTMENT, WE HOST VISITORS IN OUR STUDY CENTER, WHERE STUDENTS, SCHOLARS, AND THE PUBLIC MAY VIEW WORKS OF ART FROM OUR PERMANENT COLLECTION, FREE OF CHARGE. THE HENRY HAS A GROWING COLLECTION OF IMPORTANT WORKS FROM THE 15TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT, INCLUDING THE RENOWNED JOSEPH AND ELAINE MONSEN COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHY, AND NEW ACQUISITIONS REFLECTING THE DYNAMIC RANGE OF CONTEMPORARY ART BEING CREATED WORLDWIDE.
