IN THE COURSE OF EACH SCHOOL YEAR, THERES A LOT FOR GVP STUDENTS TO DO AND EXPERIENCE. THAT WAS ESPECIALLY TRUE THIS YEAR, AS OUR STUDENTS RETURNED TO CAMPUS AFTER ALMOST TWO YEARS OFM VIRTUAL LEARNING. THEY WORKED HARD IN THE CLASSROOM, AND IT PAID OFF: ON AVERAGE, ACCORDING TO THE FOUNTAS AND PINNELL BENCHMARK ASSESSMENT, STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED 1 TO 1.7 YEARS OF GRADE-LEVEL GROWTH IN MATH AND 1.4 GRADE-LEVELS, ON AVERAGE, IN READING; SOME MADE GAINS OF UP TO 2.5 GRADE LEVELS UNDER OUR STEAM PILLAR, STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED 1-1.7 YEARS OF GRADE-LEVEL GROWTH ON AVERAGE IN MATH. THE MATH PROGRAM, INCLUDING ASSESSMENT, IS A POINT OF FOCUS FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS; THE TEAM AIMS TO FIND AND CREATE ASSESSMENTS THAT CAN ACCURATELY MEASURE THE GROWTH OF OUR UNIQUE POPULATION OF STUDENTS GVP COMPLETED THE DOCUMENTATION OF ITS 10 INTEGRATED UNITS OF STUDY AND AN EDUCATORS GUIDE AS A CULMINATING PRODUCT OF ITS MULTI YEAR GRANT SUPPORTING STEAM. IN ADDITION TO TEST SCORES, IT WAS A YEAR FOCUSED ON REINVIGORATING THE STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY CONNECTION AND CARE THAT MAKES GVP SPECIAL. WE ALSO TOOK MANY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR AND THUS STUDENTS BEGAN ENJOYING FIELD TRIPS IN DECEMBER OF 2021. FORM 3 PARTICIPATED IN AN OVERNIGHT TRIP TO THE LEN FOOTE HIKE INN IN SEPTEMBER. OTHER FIELD TRIPS INCLUDED A VISIT TO ZOO ATLANTA, ATTENDANCE AT 2 SYNCHRONICITY THEATRE PERFORMANCES, THE MICHAEL C. CARLOS MUSEUM, A POETRY WORKSHOP AT 7STAGES, THE DECATUR FIRE DEPARTMENT AND DEKALB COUNTY COURT, AND A MARTA ORIENTATION AND TOUR OF DOWNTOWN ATLANTA. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 3 YEARS STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A 2 NIGHT TRIP TO TYBEE ISLAND 4-H CENTER IN APRIL. MAYOR BEVERLY BURKS, THE MAYOR OF CLARKSTON, VISITED THE SCHOOL TO LEARN ABOUT STUDENTS CONCERNS IN THE CLARKSTON COMMUNITY AND PROVIDE INSPIRATION AND INSIGHT ABOUT WORKING TOWARD FUTURE GOALS. IN THE ARTS EDUCATION CURRICULUM, ALL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN 30 GENERAL MUSIC CLASSES; 30 DRAMA CLASSES; 7 INTRODUCTORY INSTRUMENT CLASSES; AND 5 ALL-SCHOOL PERFORMANCES. STUDENT PARTICIPATED IN 13 DIGITAL LITERACY CLASSES AND 16 VISUAL ARTS CLASSES. THEY ALSO INTERACTED WITH THREE GUEST ARTISTS WHO LEAD EXPERIENCES AND VISUAL ART CLASSES. NINE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN INDIVIDUAL MUSIC LESSONS (UKULELE, DRUMS, & KEYBOARD) FOR 18 WEEKS. FORM 3 HAD A SPECIAL SESSION TO LEARN ABOUT SINGING BOWLS WITH A SPECIAL GUEST ARTIST. UNDER SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING & WELLNESS, STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN WEEKLY GROUP COUNSELING CLASSES, ORGANIZED BY FORM, THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THEY ALSO PARTICIPATED IN 8 WEEKS OF WOMENS HEALTH CLASS AS WELL AS IN MORNING MEETING CIRCLES TWICE A WEEK. THESE MEETINGS ARE IMPORTANT FOR CHECKING IN ON STUDENTS EMOTIONAL WELLBEING AS WELL AS SHARING ANNOUNCEMENTS. THE MENTOR AND ALUMNAE PROGRAM WAS REINVIGORATED POST-PANDEMIC WITH THE REACTIVATION OF IN-PERSON ACTIVITIES. AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, ALL STUDENTS THAT COMPLETED FORM 3 IN SPRING 2019 WERE MATCHED WITH A MENTOR AND CONTINUED THEIR EDUCATION. THIRTEEN ALUM GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL IN SPRING 2022 AND SIX OF THEM WERE PLANNING TO FURTHER THEIR STUDIES (POST-SECONDARY/COLLEGE). ACCORDING TO OUR DATA 78 ALUM WERE DOCUMENTED AS GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL AS OF SPRING 2022, WHILE 57 ALUM WERE ENROLLED IN HIGH SCHOOL DURING 2021-2022, WITH MORE UNACCOUNTED FOR WHO HAVE MOVED OUT OF STATE. THIRTY FOUR ALUM WERE IN COLLEGE/POST SECONDARY DURING 2021-22, THESE ARE YOUNG WOMEN WHO WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TRACK THROUGH OUR MENTOR PROGRAM, FOUR GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE (POST-SECONDARY DEGREES) AND ONE WAS PURSUING A GRADUATE DEGREE. ONE ALUM COMPLETED GRADUATE SCHOOL WITH MASTER OF ARTS IN INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT FROM AMERICAN UNIVERSITY. EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT AS WELL AS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REGISTERED SOME NOTABLE ACTIVITIES. CASSIE LEYMARIE, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION & CRISPIN WILONDJA (STUDENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MANAGER) PRESENTED FOR GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY PREVENTION RESEARCH CENTERS BROWNBAG LUNCH SERIES ON EDUCATING REFUGEE, IMMIGRANT, AND MIGRANT YOUTH IN MARCH. DR. CASSIE LEYMARIE WAS FEATURED ON A PANEL FOR CARES GLOBAL INNOVATION HUB TUESDAY TALK ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL DISCUSSING THE DIGITAL GENDER DIVIDE CRISPIN, CLARKSTON SUMMIT DANIELLE EREDDIA (PROGRAM MANAGER) AND CASSIE LEYMARIE PRESENTED AT THE TESOL INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION AND EXPO IN PITTSBURGH, PA IN FEBRUARY. GVP HOSTED STUDENTS FROM ACADEME OF THE OAKS AND FROM BERRY COLLEGE AS INTERNS. FINALLY, FACULTY AND STAFF PARTNERED WITH THE GEORGIA CONFLICT CENTER IN ATHENS, GA FOR A 16 HOUR RESTORATIVE PRACTICES TRAINING. FAMILY ENGAGEMENT ALSO CONTINUED WITH STAFF, FAMILIES, AND STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN FAMILY CONFERENCES, IN OCTOBER AND MARCH. FAMILIES WERE PROVIDED WITH INTERPRETATION AND TRANSPORTATION. GVP ENGAGED A TOTAL OF 76 VOLUNTEERS (INCLUDES ACTIVE SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS, INTERNS, AND MENTORS THROUGHOUT THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR) SERVING 3,086 HOURS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. SUMMER PROGRAMMING TOOK PLACE IN THE FORM OF A CAMP. SIXTEEN STUDENT ATTENDED CAMP (50% OF 2021-22 STUDENT BODY ATTEND, 75% OF OUR RETURNING STUDENTS), WITH AN AVERAGE OF 11 STUDENTS PER DAY. DURING THAT TIME, 13 VOLUNTEERS SERVED 35 HOURS. EACH DAY WAS BASED ON A THEME, WITH LANGUAGE AND LITERACY LESSONS IN THE MORNING AND STEAM ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THEM AND BOOKS THEY WERE READING. IN THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR, THE GLOBAL VILLAGE PROJECT ENROLLED 45 STUDENTS, ALL OF WHOM ARE GIRLS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 11-17 WHO HAVE RECENTLY ARRIVED IN THE US THROUGH THE REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT PROGRAM AND HAVE HAD SIGNIFICANT GAPS IN THEIR FORMAL EDUCATION DUE TO WAR AND CONFLICT. OUR EDUCATIONAL MODEL IS BUILT ON FOUR PILLARS: (1) INTENSIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERACY (2) SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART AND MATH (3) SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND (4) MENTORING AND ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT. WE SAW TREMENDOUS GROWTH AND SUCCESS FOR OUR STUDENTS ACROSS ALL 4 PILLARS. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IS CORE TO EVERY CLASS AT GVP. BUILDING VOCABULARY, FLUENCY, AND EXPRESSION IS CRITICAL ACROSS ALL SUBJECT MATTERS. IN 2024-2025, OUR STUDENTS ADVANCED AN AVERAGE OF 1.3 LEVELS IN READING, AND 83% OF STUDENTS MET OR EXCEEDED THEIR READING GOAL. IN OUR SCIENCE CURRICULUM, STUDENTS STUDIED SUBJECTS SUCH AS WEATHER CYCLES, HUMAN ANATOMY AND THE ENVIRONMENT. IN MATH, STUDENTS ADVANCED UP TO 3 GRADE LEVELS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR ADVANCING FROM BASIC NUMERACY AND CALCULATIONS TO GEOMETRY AND PRE-ALGEBRA. IN SOCIAL STUDIES STUDENTS STUDIED ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS, LEARNED ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS, AND EXPLORED INTRODUCTORY ECONOMICS. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING IS A CORE CLASS AT GVP WHERE STUDENTS FOCUS ON GVP'S CORE VALUES OF RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, KINDNESS, APPRECIATION, AND LIFELONG LEARNING. OUR STUDENTS ALSO HAD THE CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN OVER 180 HOURS OF ELECTIVE CLASSES INCLUDING DRAMA, ART, MUSIC, SOCCER, RUNNING AND LEADERSHIP. LEARNING AT GVP EXTENDS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM, AND IN 2024-25, OUR STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN OVER 30 FIELD TRIPS WHERE THEY GOT TO TAKE WHAT THEY LEARNED IN THE CLASSROOM AND APPLY IT TO THE REAL WORLD. STUDENTS VISIT THE WILLIAM CARLOS MUSEUM, THE GEORGIA STATE CAPITOL, THE ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDENS, ZOO ATLANTA, AMONG MANY OTHERS. STUDENTS ALSO PARTICIPATED IN OVERNIGHT TRIPS TO THE HIKE INN AND CAMP WAHSEGA. OUR STUDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE ALL THAT THEY HAVE BEEN LEARNING WITH OUR COMMUNITY AT SEVERAL EVENTS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR SUCH AS LEARNING GALLERIES AND STUDENT SHOWCASES. THESE EVENTS ALLOW OUR STUDENTS TO REFLECT ON THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND BUILD THEIR PRESENTATION AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS. AT GVP, OUR FAMILIES ARE INTEGRAL TO OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AND STUDENT SUCCESS. WE HAD ALMOST 10 HOME VISITS AND 400 CALLS TO CREATE STRONG BONDS BETWEEN OUR TEACHERS AND OUR PARENTS AS THEY JOINTLY GUIDE OUR STUDENTS' EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY. WE HOSTED 6 FAMILY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS AT SCHOOL AND IN THE COMMUNITY WHERE PARENTS CAME TO SEE AND SHARE IN THEIR DAUGHTERS' ACCOMPLISHMENTS. WE ALSO DELIVERED 20,000+ POUNDS OF FOOD TO OUR FAMILIES. IN THE SPRING, 14 STUDENTS GRADUATED FROM GVP AND ALL ARE HEADED TO HIGH SCHOOL. EACH GRADUATING STUDENT WAS PAIRED WITH A MENTOR WHO WILL HELP GUIDE AND COUNSEL THEM THROUGH THEIR TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL.
