AS WITH EVERY ARTS AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATION IN OUR REGION, 2020 WAS A YEAR OF TREMENDOUS CHANGES FOR BIMA. WE HAD PLANNED A BUSY YEAR OF ROBUST AND DIVERSE EXHIBITIONS, CULTURAL PROGRAMMING, AND EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS FOR ALL AGES, AND WERE OFF TO A STRONG START FOR THE YEAR. IN MID-MARCH 2020, WE CLOSED OUR DOORS TO THE PUBLIC DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. OUR MAIN SPRING EXHIBIT, FIBER 2020, WHICH FEATURED A SURVEY OF MORE THAN 50 CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS WORKING IN TEXTILE, FABRIC, FIBER, NATURAL MATERIALS AND METAL, STAYED CLOSED AND INTACT UNTIL WE COULD REOPEN OUR DOORS AGAIN. BIMA REMAINED CLOSED FOR 10 OF THE NEXT 12 MONTHS.WITH A MISSION TO CONNECT PEOPLE FROM ALL PERSPECTIVES, BACKGROUNDS AND WALKS OF LIFE TO THE ART AND CULTURE OF THE PUGET SOUND REGION, BIMA ESSENTIALLY TRANSFORMED ITSELF FROM A VIBRANT MUSEUM THAT FOCUSED ON THE LIVE, WALK-IN EXPERIENCE TO A NEW KIND OF MUSEUM THAT USED DIGITAL OUTREACH AND VIRTUAL EXPERIENCES TO CONTINUE TO CONNECT OUR AUDIENCES TO THE ART. DURING CLOSURE BIMA SERVED ITS COMMUNITY WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON VULNERABLE POPULATIONS, INCLUDING PRODUCING SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT THROUGH ART FOR STUDENTS, SENIORS, TEACHER AND PARENTS, ARTISTS, SMALL BUSINESSES, FELLOW NON-PROFIT AND SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS. WE DID THIS THROUGH MORE THAN 50 DIFFERENT PROGRAMS, INCLUDING PRODUCING SHORT DIGITAL ART CLASSES FOR USE BY HOME-SCHOOLED STUDENTS AND THEIR TEACHERS; PRODUCING MORE THAN 50 LECTURES, PANELS, AND ON-LINE PROGRAMS AIMED AT SPOTLIGHTING ARTISTS, CRAFTSPEOPLE, MUSICIANS, AND OTHER MAKERS; CREATING ART KITS FOR HOME USE FOR SENIOR CITIZENS AND STUDENTS; AND DOING CONNECTION CAMPAIGNS TO KEEP US IN TOUCH WITH OUR STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING THOSE WHO WERE ISOLATED DUE TO HEALTH, MOBILITY CHALLENGES, AND PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCE. THE YEAR TESTED THE RESILIENCY AND FLEXIBILITY BOTH STAFF AND PUBLIC, AS BIMA CONVERTED ITS DIVERSE ROSTER OF EVENTS, FESTIVALS AND PROGRAMMING RANGING FROM THE WITHIN/EARSHOT JAZZ FESTIVAL AND BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION TO DIA DE LOS MUERTOS AND CREATIVE AGING INITIATIVES THAT SUPPORTED SENIORS - TO DIGITAL OR HYBRID OFFERINGS. EVEN BIMA'S EARNED INCOME PROGRAMS WERE NOT COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN, BUT INSTEAD WERE TRANSITIONED TO THE NEW NORMAL OF COVID: THE STORE DEVELOPED AN ON-LINE SALES PLATFORM SO WE COULD CONTINUE TO SELL THE WORK OF PUGET SOUND ARTISTS THROUGH THE WEBSITE, AND OUR BISTRO CLOSED ITS DAILY SERVICE AND DEVELOPED A ONCE A WEEK DINNER DELIVERY PROGRAM THAT INCLUDED PAID AND FREE COMMUNITY MEALS. RENTAL PROGRAMS WERE DISCONTINUED COMPLETELY. THE MUSEUM USED THE TIME OF CLOSURE TO FOCUS MORE DIRECTLY ON OUR COMMITMENTS TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION, CONTINUING TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION AND ARTS OFFERINGS, FROM A NEW PUBLIC SERIES ENTITLED UNTOLD STORIES TO INTERNAL EVENTS LIKE SHARE, LEARN GROW, BOTH AIMED AT INCREASING THE ORGANIZATION'S ACUMEN IN MODELLING OUR BELIEF IN RACIAL EQUITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE AS A FOUNDATIONAL PILLAR OF THE MUSEUM.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$435.4KCommunity Art Exhibitions and Education
CURATORIAL: AT THE CORE OF BIMA'S MISSION IS SHINING A LIGHT ON THE TALENTED AND DIVERSE ARTISTS OF THE PUGET SOUND REGION AND BEYOND. 2022 WAS A MILESTONE YEAR FOR THE MUSEUM. ALL OF OUR MAJOR EXHIBITIONS SET NEW STANDARDS FOR BOTH BIMA AND THE ROLE OF A SMALLER, COMMUNITY BASED ART MUSEUM. TIA BLASSINGAME & ELLEN SHETFIELD EXPLORED RACIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND LGBTQIA+ THEMES. 'AMERICANS INCARCERATED: A FAMILY'S STORY OF SOCIAL INJUSTICE', AN EXHIBITION BY JAN & CHRIS HOPKINS IN MEMORY OF THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SIGNING OF EXECUTIVE ORDER 9066 TO ARTFULLY PROVIDE A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND THIS DARK CHAPTER. THE FAMILY OF LEGENDARY ARTIST GEORGE TSUTAKAWA HONORED BIMA WITH THEIR REQUEST TO BE THE FIRST MAJOR EXHIBITION IN 30 YEARS, THE 'LANGUAGE OF NATURE' EXHIBITION. GINNY RUFFNER'S RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION 'WHAT IF?' DAZZLED GUESTS WITH HER PLAYFUL AND POWERFUL GLASSWORK MASTERY, CONCEPTUAL INSTALLATIONS AND COMPLEX TECHNOLOGICAL ENGINEERING THAT WERE DISGUISED AS COLORFUL AND INTERACTIVE MARVELS! BIMA SPOTLIGHTS ARTISTS IN VARIOUS STAGES OF THEIR CAREER AND WELCOMED A NEW ARTIST TO THE SCENE, BLAKE BLANCO'S EXHIBITION 'WE ALL DREAM'. EVA FUNDERBURGH EXHIBITION OF CERAMIC BEASTS TOOK GUESTS TO ANOTHER DIMENSION! BIMA WAS ALSO ENTRUSTED BY LOCAL CERAMIC AND TEXTILE ARTIST ELIZABETH DONNALLY DAVIDSON, AN ARTIST WHOSE PRACTICE GOES BACK SEVERAL DECADES, TO BE THE FIRST PLACE TO EVER SHOW HER WORK! THE SHERRY GROVER GALLERY, BIMA'S JEWEL BOX ROOM DEDICATED YEAR-ROUND TO ARTIST'S BOOKS, CONTINUED TO ELEVATE THE FORM AND EDUCATE GUESTS ABOUT THE POWERFUL ART FORM.
