SELF, a Florida-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit Green Bank and certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) with over 15 years of experience financing sustainable and resilient housing repairs and improvements in under-resourced communities throughout Florida.
Recent data highlights that nearly half of Americans were denied loans last year, limiting access to critical home repairs and upgrades, especially in the face of increasing climate-related impacts such as hurricanes, flooding, and heatwaves. These challenges are particularly acute for Low- and Moderate-Income (LMI) households, which often lack the resources to recover or adapt effectively.
SELF addresses this urgent need by providing low-interest, unsecured loans based on the borrower’s ability to pay, rather than traditional credit scores. Our mission-driven approach promotes financial inclusion and resilience by enabling unbanked and underbanked households to access funds for essential upgrades such as roofing, high-efficiency HVAC systems, impact windows and doors, hurricane shutters, and other climate-resilient improvements. These upgrades not only mitigate climate impacts but also reduce utility and insurance costs, support long-term affordability, and enhance health and safety.
