Bicycle Donation and Community Service
During the 2023 tax year, Bikes for the World (BFW) enlisted the participation and assistance of some 60 U.S. community service individual volunteers to collect 11,915 used bicycles and donate them to program partners in 10 countries: The U.S. El Salvador, Costa Rica, Barbados, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Kenya. Bicycles donated abroad provided access to employment, skills training, education, and health care. Bicycles donated in the United States provided transportation to low-income workers, and training and recreational opportunities for at-risk youth. BFWs volunteer-based efforts provide educational and rewarding community service opportunities to volunteers of all ages, enabling many to meet service requirements for high school graduation, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Eagle and Gold Ranks, Bar Mitzvah Service, and more.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2023 – Jun 30, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$1.8MProgram 1 [2025]
In 2025 Bikes for the World collected AND donated a record number of bicycles and sewing machines. It goes without saying that each one of these tools is changing lives in a multitude of ways, but we cant help but appreciate that starts right here at home with our donors, supporters, and of course volunteers. Throughout the year our Rockville warehouse stayed busy every week. Our small staff was amplified by dedicated volunteers who allowed us to process and donate a record number of bikes this year. Over 2,000 volunteers grabbed wrenches and logged over 7,000 hours- thats even more hours than our staff worked this year combined! We hosted 60 school, civic, and corporate groups in the warehouse giving them the opportunity to work with their hands, learn more about bikes, and stretch their impact to make a difference around the world. At our remote collection events we joined forces with over 50 groups. And our Thursday night volunteer nights are growing in popularity. This all means that we donated nearly 13,000 bikes in 2025 and loaded 25 containers of bikes for overseas partners.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2024 – Jun 30, 2025Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$1.4M
