Drama Club Arts Programming
Our goals include strengthning self-concept of youth participants and the ability to apply learned skills to real life circumstances, an increase in transformational relationships with mentors and peers, an increase in safe spaces for young people to explore healthy risk-taking, increasing institutional buy-in and staff support of arts programming for incarcerated and justice invoived youth, and strengthening the field of arts programming through collecting research on mitigating trauma and enhancing healing for justice-involved young people. Josie Whittlesey founded Drama Club in 2013. What began as a staged reading at Crossroads Juvenile Center, has blossomed into a multi-site, multi-program company of Improv theatre workshops, classes and performances that serves approximately 300 youth annually. The young people Drama Club serves are incarcerated, criminal legal system involved, or at high risk for involvement with the criminal legal system. Our youth are 95% persons of color, 65% are between the age 14-16, the remainder are between 17-25. 76% are male, and 24% are female. Our youth are primarily from New York City neighborhoods that suffer government and corporate underinvestment such as central Brooklyn and South Bronx.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2021 – Jun 30, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$661.6K
