Family Education and Literacy Programs
Make Way for Books Family Education and Literacy Programs:The majority of young children (ages birth to five) in Arizona do not have access to high-quality early education. Make Way for Books provides access to high-quality, bilingual (English/Spanish) early literacy education through programs that meet families with young children in high-need locations including community sites and neighborhood elementary schools as well as online. All programs in this strategy work to increase childrens and families access to books. Through Family Education and Literacy programs, children experience shared reading and literacy activities that help to build their critical emergent literacy and language skills as well as social emotional skills and positive approaches to reading. Through a two-generation approach, children and parents learn together.(Continued on Schedule O)GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJul 1, 2023 – Jun 30, 2024Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$1.4MProfessional Development Programs
Make Way for Books Professional Development Programs (The Story Project and Cuntame):This comprehensive early literacy strategy provides economically-disadvantaged children (ages birth to 5) with opportunities to discover the joy of books and develop early literacy skills. The program serves early childhood educators, home-based care providers, families, and children enrolled at under-resourced preschools, childcare centers, and home-based care settings throughout southern Arizona. The program provides coaching and workshops for educators as well as high-quality books and literacy resources for educators and children to access in early care settings and at home. Through increased access to books and daily exposure to meaningful literacy activities, 98% of children gained emergent literacy and language skills.
