Program 1 [2020]
Pioneer days: there are demonstrations of open-hearth cooking and baking apple pies over a fire; children are given the opportunity to play games typical of the 1800s. Additionally, period music is performed and Interns give tours of an early 1800s log cabin. This event is held in conjunction with "Hike-a-thon" an event sponsored by Miami University. Summer program series of events with weekly demonstrations and hands-on experiences, such as, Old Fashioned Laundry Day; Frontier Treats--churning ice cream; Art of the Quill, writing with a hand-made quill; Pioneer Crafts, dipping candles and making dolls; and Victorian Virtual Reality, making a Stereoscope. Attendance varies with each program. These events are all held outdoors, thus the weather at times will influence the number of participants. Tours of the historic Doty Homestead house and barn (mid-1800s) and DeWitt log cabin (early 1800s): Interns give tours of these properties and explain the origin and use of various artifacts and provide demonstrations of selected artifacts at these three sites. For example, interns will demonstrate the use of a loom or explain how to use a corn sheller and letting attendees try it for themselves.
