Citizen Scientist Residency Pathway
THE CITIZEN SCIENTIST RESIDENCY PATHWAY IS DESIGNED TO BUILD CAPACITY FOR CITIZEN SCIENCE WITHIN OUR THREE PARTNERING TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAMS - KERN TEACHER RESIDENCY GREENFIELD (GREENFIELD UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT), KERN HIGH TEACHER RESIDENCY (KERN HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT), AND KERN URBAN TEACHER RESIDENCY (BAKERSFIELD CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT). TO INCREASE INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY FOR CITIZEN SCIENCE WORK, WE HAVE HIRED A CITIZEN SCIENCE RESIDENCY LIAISON FOR EACH DISTRICT TO SERVE AS THE MEDIARY BETWEEN THE GRANT-SPECIFIC INITIATIVES, RESIDENCY PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS, AND SCHOOL DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS. TO OPERATIONALIZE AND EMBED CITIZEN SCIENCE WITHIN THE THREE RESIDENCY PROGRAMS, WE HAVE MODIFIED SCIENCE AND MATH METHODS COURSEWORK AND CLINICAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCES WITHIN EACH RESIDENCY PROGRAM TO INCLUDE THE INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER SCIENCE SUPPLEMENTARY AUTHORIZATION, UC DAVIS C-STEM CERTIFICATION, PROJECT LEAD THE WAY CERTIFICATION, AND CITIZEN SCIENCE RESIDENCY SEMINAR. TO CREATE SPACE FOR INNOVATION OUTSIDE OF THE TRADITIONAL MODES OF A TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM, WE ALSO LEAD JOINT SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCES IN WHICH RESIDENTS AND MENTOR TEACHERS WORK COLLABORATIVELY TO LEAD CITIZEN-SCIENCE INFORMED COMPUTER SCIENCE, DATA SCIENCE, AND ROBOTICS CAMPS FOR ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS. THE PURPOSE OF THE TITLE IV-E CALSWEC GRANT IS "WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT," I.E. TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE WORKFORCE BY INCREASING THE NUMBER OF MASTER'S-PREPARED SOCIAL WORKERS WHO ARE WORKING IN PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE. THE MSW PROGRAM ADMITS STUDENTS TO A FULL-TIME PROGRAM AND A PART-TIME PROGRAM. FULL-TIME STUDENTS TAKE 15 UNITS EACH REGULAR TERM, AND PART-TIME STUDENTS TAKE 9 UNITS EACH REGULAR TERM AND 3 UNITS EACH OF TWO SUMMER TERMS. STUDENTS ENROLLMENT WAS 156 IN FALL 2021. THE NUMBER OF MSW GRADUATES WAS 75 IN MAY 2021. MOST FULL-TIME MSW STUDENTS GRADUATE IN TWO YEARS AND MOST PART-TIME MSW STUDENTS GRADUATE IN THREE YEARS. AS EXPECTED, THE MSW TIME-TO-DEGREE INDICATED 2.2 YEARS. MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT ALREADY WORKING IN PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE, MUST OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT IN PUBLIC CHILD WELFARE OR PAY BACK THE MONEY RECEIVED. THE GPS PROGRAM CONSISTS OF A COHORT OF STUDENTS MAJORING IN BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, PRE-HEALTH PRE-NURSING, AND PHYSICS. SERVICES INCLUDE COHORT ENROLLMENT AND BLOCK SCHEDULING IN MAJOR GATEWAY AND FIRST YEAR SEMINAR COURSES; INTRUSIVE ADVISING; PEER MENTORING; SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION -- SI EMBEDDED IN GATEWAY STEM COURSES; MONTHLY WORKSHOPS; STUDY GROUPS; FREE TEXTBOOK RENTALS; FREE LAPTOP RENTALS; FREE ATTENDANCE TO A CONFERENCE FOR COHORT STUDENTS; RESEARCH STIPEND FOR PAST COHORT STUDENTS. FOUR YEARS OF COHORT STUDENTS MAJORING IN BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, PRE-HEALTH PRE-NURSING, AND PHYSICS.
