Healthy Schools Initiative
Promoting healthy schools in Chicago: HSC advocates for policies and practices that support health and learning in Chicago. Focus areas include: nutritious school food; physical activity; comprehensive health services; green schoolyards; and healthy school environments. HSC's programming and advocacy work have led to significant progress toward healthier school environments in Chicago including one of the country's strongest local wellness policies green schoolyards across Chicago neighborhoods the reinstatement of daily recess and a strong commitment to coordinated school health services for students. HSC provides support to parents teachers and principals at more than 50 Chicago public schools to help them champion healthy changes in their schools. Space to Grow HSC's green schoolyards initiative transforms Chicago schoolyards into beautiful and functional spaces to play learn garden and be outside. Promoting healthy schools nationally: HSC advocates for state and national policy around healthy schools that include access to essential school-based health services green schoolyards and healthy and safe environments. HSC leads the national Healthy Students Promising Futures Learning Collaborative which supports states in developing comprehensive school-based health service programs. In Illinois HSC supports policies that help Illinois school districts expand school-based health services and provide healthy school meals. Through the Healthy Green Schools and Colleges program HSC is a national leader in promoting practices that create healthier and more sustainable school environments.
