The Restaurant Employee Relief Fund (RERF) was a campaign to provide one-time grants to more than 43,000 restaurant workers who suffered financially due to the COVID-19 health and economic crisis. 100 percent of all donations went directly to RERF applicants and each approved applicant received a $500 grant to help with expenses such as rent and mortgage payments, transportation, school loans, childcare and medical bills. All applicants who met the eligibility requirements were funded. The grants were provided to restaurant workers in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Approximately 60 percent of recipients were between the ages of 21 and 35 and nearly 60 percent identify as female. Fifty percent of grant recipients are racial minorities, identifying as - Black or African American, Hispanic or Latinx, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native and/or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. ProStart is a nationwide program for high school students that focuses on developing the next generation of restaurant and foodservice leaders. The program is industry-driven, combining culinary arts and restaurant management training to build practical skills. ProStart provides students a platform to discover new interests while highlighting successful career opportunities across the industry. ProStart serves 150,000 students in 1,900 schools across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the Territory of Guam and Department of Defense Education Activity Schools in Europe and the Pacific. Additionally, the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation awards nearly $1 million in scholarships and grants each year. NRAEF and the American Hotel & Lodging Association, are entered into a contract with the Department of Labor (DOL) to create and implement a registered apprenticeship initiative for the restaurant and hospitality industries. The program will provide a definitive pathway to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills and confidence to advance to management-level positions. In July 2019, NRAEF entered into another contract with DOL for ex-offenders to find employment in the restaurant and hospitality industries.
