Cardiac Care and Rehabilitation Program
HSHS St. John's Hospital has one of the largest heart programs in Illinois. We are dedicated to providing compassionate care to patients and their families that makes us unique. In 2022, HSHS St. John's has continued to build their structured heart program. 150 plus Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVRs) have been completed this year, along with 95 Watchman and 24 Mitral Clip procedures. In addition, St. John's cardiac programs have received the following Awards, Designations and Accomplishments: * HSHS St. John's earned the platinum award from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry for the MI Action Registry * HSHS St. John's was the first hospital in Illinois to receive the Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence for its cardiac catheterization lab. * HSHS St. John's Cardiac Rehabilitation Department is an American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) certified program Other innovations that continue to be utilized by HSHS St. John's Hospital's cardiovascular services include: * WATCHMEN Procedure - Used to replace blood thinners for patients with atrial fibrillation. * TAVR devices - Smaller, more easily delivered cardiac valves implanted without the need for open heart surgery or the need for general anesthesia. * ACURATE IDE - Evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the ACURATE System for TAVR in symptomatic subjects who have severe aortic valve stenosis and who are at intermediate or greater risk for surgical valve replacement. * REBALANCE- Endovascular Ablation of the Right Greater Splanchnic Nerve in Subjects Having Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction: Randomized Controlled Feasibility Trial * MitraClip - minimally invasive repair of the mitral valve, leading implant center in Illinois . * Prairie Cardiovascular cardiologists at St. John's Hospital were the first to enroll patients into Lutonix's LEVANT 2. LEVANT 2 is a global, randomized trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Moxy Drug Coated Balloon compared to a standard angioplasty balloon for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease. * CREST 2 - Randomized trial comparing carotid surgery to carotid stenting. CREST 2 Registry (C2R) - Designed to be a companion to accompany the CREST-2 trial; the registry will promote rapid initiation and completion of enrollment in the CREST-2 trial, ensure that Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting (CAS) is performed by adequately experienced operators within CREST-2 and C2R, closely monitor clinical outcomes * Persuade-Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF) and Symptomatic ObstrUctive IliofemorAl Venous Disease and Venous StEnting: * EVERA - Updated ICD technology allowing patients to safely undergo MRI scan. * SOLVE CRT - Stimulation Of the Left Ventricular Endocardium for Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in Non-Responders and Previously Untreatable Patients (WiSE CRT System). * Micra - Smallest pacemaker available that requires no leads or generator external to the heart. * Amplatzer PFO Occluder -Post Approval - Confirm the safety and effectiveness of the AMPLATZER PFO Occluder, in a post approval setting, in patients with a PFO who have had a cryptogenic stroke confirmed by a study neurologist. * INTERRUPT AF - Post approval clinical study (PAS) to evaluate open irrigated ablation catheters with high resolution mapping to treat paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. * ICLAS-Clinical Study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Adagio AF Cryoablation System in the ablation treatment of symptomatic persistent atrial fibrillation. Data will support a pre-market application. * HEAL-A Multi-Center study evaluating participants who received Cangaroo Envelope, Tyrx Envelope, or No Envelope During CIED Implantation * CHAMPION-WATCHMAN FLX versus NOAC for Embolic Protection in the Management of Patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation * EMPOWER-Assessment of the Carillon Mitral Contour System in Treating Heart Failure with Functional Mitral Regurgitation * ELEGANCE- Drug Eluting Registry for Real world treatment of Lesions in the Peripheral Vasculature * C GUARDIAN-A Multi-Center single arm, pivotal study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the CGuard Carotid Stent System when used to treat Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis in Patients Undergoing Carotid Artery Stenting * REAL AF-Real World experience of Catheter ablation for the treatment of symptomatic paroxysmal and persistent Atrial Fibrillation using Novel Contact Force Technologies * SUMMIT - A prospective, controlled, multicenter clinical investigation of the Tendyne Mitral Valve System for the treatments of eligible subjects with symptomatic, severe mitral regurgitation. * OASIS 9/Synergy Stent Registry - A 2x2 factorial randomized controlled trial of Colchicine and spironolactone in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction. * TARGET BP - A Pivotal, Multicenter, Blinded, Sham Procedure-Controlled Trial of Renal Denervation by the Peregrine System Kit, in Subjects with Hypertension. The purpose of this study is to obtain an assessment of the efficacy and safety of renal denervation by alcohol-mediated neurolysis using the Peregrine System Kit in uncontrolled hypertensive subjects when used in combination with antihypertensive medications. In FY22, the majority of the Internal Medicine cases that were admitted to St. John's Hospital came through our Emergency Department (52%), while 36% came to our facility as direct admits from our Connect program. The Emergency Room is a Level 1 Trauma Center that services Central Illinois. The total visit volume is approximately 50,400 with a 21% admission rate. The Connect Program is a regional referral program that started in 2010. The program is a one-call system that focuses on physician alignment and clinical protocols. St. John's has a dedicated outreach representative that works with referring hospitals to address any issues and to improve the services. St. John's has two hospitalist groups servicing the patients: HSHS Medical Group (which has grown significantly over the past 5 - 6 years) and Springfield Clinic. This program enables the hospitalist to manage the in-hospital care for patients and coordinates care with other consulting MD's, if needed. An effective hospitalist program can benefit hospitals by reducing length of stay, improving hospital efficiencies, and improving quality care. This program also enables primary care MD's to reduce time at the hospital and spend more time at their practice.
