Program 1 [2020]
CONSERVATION: Keweenaw Land Trust (KLT) protected additional lands in Baraga County as part of the Abbaye Peninsula-Huron Bay Conservation Initiative. A 50-acre property with about 3000 feet of frontage on Lake Superior was acquired to expand the Finlander Bay Nature Area, with primary funding from the US Fish and Wildlife Service National Coastal Wetland Conservation program (USFWS-NCWC). In addition to its healthy and diverse terrestrial habitats, the additional acreage and shoreline helps protect the delicate near-shore aquatic habitats and reefs that support important Lake Superior food webs and fisheries. A 9-acre property, with about 900 feet of Lake Superior shoreline along Keweenaw Bay, was also acquired as part of the USFWS-NCWC program. The site features diverse, intact coastal habitats and rock ledges along the shore provide an access point for the Lake Superior water trail system. A generous land donation of ~100 acres In Houghton County, with about 3000 feet of frontage on Portage Lake, enabled KLT to establish the Point Mills Historical Nature Area, with the site featuring some ruins and remnants of a stamp mill that operated during the region's copper mining period early in the 20th century. In addition to a variety of recreational opportunities, the property has scenic, historical, and cultural values that offer a variety of public benefits and new opportunities for community partnerships. KLT is in the process of evaluating several current conservation opportunities based on partner referrals, landowner inquiries, and its own program initiatives. In accordance with Land Trust Alliance (LTA) Standards, the organization continues improving its land conservation practices and record keeping.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$80KProgram 2 [2020]
STEWARDSHIP: KLT continued work to enhance habitats and facilitate public access opportunities in keeping with resource sustainability goals. Updated management plans were developed for the Huron Bay Field Station (HBFS), Paavola Wetlands Nature Area, and the Lily Creek Nature Area. In particular, the Paavola Wetlands property received the Tree Farm Certification. KLT made significant investments in the HBFS property to improve its interior road system that will facilitate site management and ongoing habitat improvement efforts. Habitat and recreation trail enhancements at HBFS benefit both wildlife and users with continued development as a Grouse Enhanced Management Site in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. KLT made numerous site and facility improvements at multiple KLT properties to benefit users. In accordance with LTA Standards, KLT conducted annual monitoring of its nature areas and private lands protected by conservation easements to ensure that conservation values are being protected. Several educational outreach programs were conducted in support of environmental stewardship and regional habitat enhancement goals, as described below.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$157.7KProgram 3 [2020]
EDUCATION: The COVID-19 pandemic greatly curtailed in-person programs during 2020 but KLT expanded online and self-serve opportunities for education and community engagement in response. KLT co-hosted the third annual Native Plant Symposium that shared information, tips, and strategies with over 125 online participants. The Natural History Book Club provided a friendly venue for topical discussions in online forums. A botanical illustration workshop provided participants a means to connect artistic and botanical interests. The "Story Trail" program continued to create family-friendly experiences at KLT nature areas, with several events held in cooperation with community partners. KLT held the "Run Wild" self-serve trail recreation event to encourage the community to connect with KLT protected lands while enjoying the health benefits of outdoor activity. KLT continued being an organizer and sponsor of the Sustainability Film series and discussion groups in collaboration with several other community organizations. KLT conducted educational outreach through its website (www.KeweenawLandTrust.org), social media and email notices, and through print publication of newsletters, reports, and brochures.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$18.5K
