Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES)
Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) is the youth arm of Voces de la Frontera, and has been recognized nationally for it’s powerful, multiracial youth organizing since it was founded in 2003. YES student leaders have been instrumental in the national struggles for the DREAM Act and immigration reform. At the state and local level, YES has led the struggle for in-state tuition for immigrant youth, and protecting public education by mobilizing the vote on school funding referendums. YES has also won recognition of Martin Luther King Jr Day in the Racine Unified School District in 2009, marched with their teachers in 2011 to defend collective bargaining rights during the struggle against Act 10, the Student Bill of Rights in Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) to protect the right to organize in 2012, passage of the MPS Safe Haven Resolution in 2017 to protect immigrant students and families under the Trump Administration.GeographiesWisconsin, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedChildren's rights,Ethnic and racial minority rights,Immigrants' rights,Prisoners' rights,Diversity and intergroup relations,Freedom from slavery,Freedom from violence and torture,Freedom of association and expression,Freedom of religion,Right to free movement and asylum,Right to life,Right to privacy,Justice rights,Social rightsIndigenous peoples,Multiracial people,People of Latin American descent,Families,Non-adult children,Parents,Widows and widowers––Essential Workers Rights Network (EWRN)
The Essential Workers Rights Network (EWRN) was founded in response to workplace abuses that were happening at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak. The mission of the EWRN is to strengthen the leadership of workers and promote mutual support in the workplace and across the Essential Worker Rights Network. We provide trainings on workers’ rights, and empower workers to collectively address workplace concerns and build community support, especially when legal protections are weak or do not exist. We also identify and fight for changes in laws and institutions to protect workers against all forms of discrimination and abuse, and the right to work with dignity. Current campaigns include Citizenship for All, as immigrants have been on the frontlines of the pandemic as essential workers, they and their families have experienced disproportionately higher rates of sickness and death due to their immigration status and their job. The EWRN is also providing community outreach to essential workers and hosting pop up vaccine clinics in partnership with the Department of Health, in addition to existing vaccine resources and clinics to fight against misinformation and save lives.GeographiesWisconsin, USADatesNot indicatedSourceUser-generatedCommunity and economic development,Human rights,Human services,International relations,Public safetyIndigenous peoples,Multiracial people,People of Latin American descent,At-risk youth,Economically disadvantaged people,Immigrants and migrants,Nomadic people,Victims and oppressed people,Activists,Farmers,Self-employed people,Unemployed people––
