SHELTER TRANSPORT ANIMAL RESCUE TEAM

Programs
Program 1 [2020]
Founded in 2011, Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team (aka START Rescue) goal has been to reduce euthanasia rates of surrendered strays and seized animals in the overcrowded shelters of Southern and Central California. These abused and neglected dogs and cats desperately need safe passages to less populated states where rescue agencies provide the rehabilitation and socialization necessary to position them for adoption. We address this need by providing monthly transport/relocation (one of two flagship programs) services for at-risk shelter animals, linking overburdened shelters in California to STARTs fully vetted, contracted destination partners in Oregon & Washington where there is both space and demand. For the year 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, START was only able to relocate 683 animals. Since START was founded, it has rescued, transported and relocated 13,242 shelter animals in this program.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$383.1KProgram 2 [2020]
Our other flagship program is our spay/neuter services for underserved California communities such as Riverside, Lancaster, Palmdale, Delano, Porterville and surrounding areas of Tulare County. These areas have large numbers of stray and neglected dogs and cats along with very high shelter intake. It is especially important for us to build strong relationships with low-income spay/neuter neighbors in target zip code California locations. For the year 2020 START was able to offer and perform 1,084 Spay/neuter procedures. Since it was founded, START has provided over 11,000 spay/neuter procedures in these underserved areas and to low-income senior citizens.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$103.5KProgram 3 [2020]
While the majority of donations we receive are used for our two primary programs, transport/relocation and spay/neuter, we also have a long-term goal of securing a piece of real estate that would allow us to build an animal sanctuary. The sanctuary would then allow START to rescue special needs, seniors and unadoptable animals to live out their lives in a loving, peaceful, protective environment. At the moment we expect securing a property sufficient in size to fulfill this vision would cost between $2,000,000 and $3,000,000. We are grateful to our donors that have contributed to this goal and it has led to us securing a portion of the purchase price, but we have a long way to go. As of December 31, 2020 the Board of Directors has earmarked $509,000 of our available cash as a Sanctuary Fund for the eventual purchase of a property with buildings, arenas and outhouses to advance this opportunity.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided––
