Program 1 [2020]
Waterkeepers advocacy program reviews administrative government agency actions and actions by local decisionmakers that affect waterway health. Our outreach and education program, combined with our science program, uses science and the law to fashion education and engagement opportunities for citizens to stand up for their right to clean, fishable, swimmable, drinkable water. We've engaged over 1,ooo citizens in direct action standing up against the threat of an industrial-scale mega slaughterhouse proposed outside the City of Great Falls, ensuring decisionmakers know citizens support local, traditional agriculture and sustainable food systems, not corporate food systems. We collected more than two dozen water quality samples at more than a dozen river monitoring locations, tracking the severity and prevalence of harmful algal blooms in SW Montana rivers. We reviewed and submitted comments on more than a dozen pollution permits advocating for stronger pollution control limits that better protect local waterway health. We also won a precedential federal district court case resulting in most large nutrient pollution dischargers across the State of Montana possessing an enforceable timeline for performing upgrades to their pollution treatment facilities.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$73.4KWaterkeepers Advocacy Program

Our outreach and education program, combined with our science program, uses science and the law to fashion education and engagement opportunities for citizens to stand up for their right to clean, fishable, swimmable, drinkable water. We've engaged hundreds of citizens in commenting on several different pollution permitting decisions by state agencies with the potential to degrade high-quality waterways in the Upper Missouri River Basin. We've also engaged and supported senior water right holders in protecting their rights, and local streams, from the irresponsible approval of sprawl development proposals that threaten to dewater and pollute local water resources. We've collaborated with several non-governmental coalitions towards improving local government water resource planning in SW Montana, including low impact development and wetlands protection policies. We've participated as formal stakeholders from the environmental advocacy sector on the state of Montana's Nutrient Work Group and Subdivision Advisory Working Group. We filed and won litigation challenging unlawful state agency pollution permit approvals and safeguarded high-quality water from future pollution discharges.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$179.2K
