Programs
Program 1 [2020]
Ethiopia Operations: We partner with rural communities to create sustainable pathways out of poverty by: ? Delivering high-quality health education, empowering community health trainers, and giving direct medical care so that people can LIVE long and healthy lives ? Restoring the opportunity for children and adults to LEARN through high quality early childhood, primary, secondary, and vocational education ? Equipping men and women to EARN a predictable income through business development training and savings groups to create financial resilience ? Building the capacity of community leaders to maintain program initiatives, so that communities can sustain gains and THRIVE for years to come. In 2020, our program services and implementation in Ethiopia, including the rehabilitation, were supplemented with immediate relief and response to the COVID-19 crisis, which created severe shortages of food, labor, and household income in communities where we work. We provided health education awareness and training to all beneficiary households, and did several nutritional support distributions of food and cooking oil, to offset food insecurity. Additionally, we distributed personal protective equipment (PPE) to program beneficiaries, as well as disease prevention literature, that was posted in households. We worked closely with the Community Development Committees (CDC) that Three Roots International has developed in each community, as well as with government stakeholders, to support a Covid-19 monitoring strategy through community organizing. To date, there has not been a single case of Covid-19 reported in Three Roots? partner communities. Our existing programs continued in 2021: administration of a community school for 371 vulnerable students, grades K-8, professional development for teachers in community schools, and the surrounding geographic area, development of Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), and administration of quarterly parent meetings for 200 parents, to increase participation in education. To ensure continued learning at home, while the community school was closed due to Covid-19, we distributed 80 solar-powered radios to provide remote learning opportunities for radio education to 8th-grade students, in preparation for the national exam. Savings and loan groups served 80 women, and 46 small business loans were distributed among members, by group decision, for the development of micro-businesses and financial resilience and social support networks. 94 families strengthened their families? health and hygiene through the US of home latrines, built following training and support from Three Roots. Though our programs had to be altered, according to government regulations for community gathering, we maintained our direct support to all beneficiaries. We continue to partner with government and local stakeholders to ensure that projects are well-supported, focus on contextually relevant methodologies for change, and address micro and macro systems within each community.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$114.4KProgram 2 [2020]
Child Sponsorship program: In 2020, 95 children in our sponsorship program received educational and medical support, tutorial classes, household training and encouragement through our sponsorship program in order to provide critical support to the most destitute households as they increase their income and health-promoting behaviors. Families are selected for participation in the sponsorship program by the Community Development Committee, which is trained and formed by Three Roots, according to specific criteria. This ensures that sponsorship households are selected by community members, and that the community recognizes the sponsorship program as being in place to support the entire community, through enhanced child development, health and education outcomes.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2020 – Dec 31, 2020Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$37.9KProgram 3 [2020]
