INQUILINXS UNIDXS POR JUSTICIA-UNITED RENTERS FOR JUSTIC

Programs
Program 1 [2018]
1. Tenant and community education: In 2018, Inquilinxs Unidxs worked with 314 families across North and South Minneapolis to ensure their stability in their homes through an education project: educating tenants of their rights, and the community about the situation of the renters living in it. Through this education program, nearly 100 families gained stability in their homes. Without the work of Inquilinxs, these tenants would have had to leave their homes through eviction, rent increases, or license revocation. Inquilinxs Unidxs worked to educate the families of their rights to stay, and educate the community about the situation, in order to ensure that families could stay in their homes. At the same time, Inquilinxs Unidxs returned over $200,000 to the pockets of tenants through connecting tenants to legal support, educating renters about the situations in which landlords cannot legally collect rent, and supporting tenants to negotiate with landlords over rent increases. The activities of the education program for tenants consistent of regular meetings where tenants discuss their rights and their options to move forward together. Sometimes, tenants decide to conduct a direct meeting with their landlord, host a public education action, take their landlord to court, or talk with the press about their situation. 2. Tenant bill of Rights - In 2018, Inquilinxs Unidxs spent some time working on a Tenants Bill of Rights with the Minneapolis City Council. This work consisted of 10 private meetings with council members, 2 public meetings with community members, and education of Inquilinxs Unidxs members about the policies on the table. None of the discussed policies have been passed.GeographiesNot indicatedDatesJan 1, 2018 – Dec 31, 2018Source990No causes providedNo populations provided–$288KRenter Support and Education
