GIVE BACKpacks Campaign
The GIVE BACKpacks Campaign provides students in need with backpacks filled with school supplies. This helps support the beginning of the school year costs for families in need. Howard Hughes Medical Institute funding supports science education. During FY22, two full-time staff administered the grant, and MCPS completed the following activities: 1) Provided the opportunity for all students in grades 6 through 12 to engage in biotechnology lab investigations within core science content courses,2) Provided high school and early college students the opportunity to conduct independent biotechnology research through paid internships in the MCPS DNA Resource Center,3) Provided elementary, middle and high school students from underrepresented populations the opportunity to attend STEM summer day camps which provided laboratory and field experiences in the life, environmental and physical sciences, and 4) Organized a virtual MCPS Youth Climate Summit during which 120 students discussed local strategies to respond to climate change. The East Silver Spring literacy project funds school-based academic coaching and teacher development provided by the Lavinia Group to MCPS staff. The project expanded during the 2021-22 school year to include an additional eight schools within MCPS, as well as a Learning Center at Watkins Mill Elementary School.
